Is Isaac Rutherford of Gallia County, Ohio, the father of John Rutherford of Davis County, Iowa

Isaac Rutherford of Gallia and Ross Counties, Ohio, and Davis County, Iowa, is possibly the father of John Rutherford and his several potential siblings. The 1820-1840 United States censuses show that Isaac had up to 13 children. These censuses do not give the names of individuals in the household, but only their sexes and ages within a range of 5-10 years. All of the following potential children, including John Rutherford, have links to Isaac, to each other, or to both. Each fits well within the early censuses with few discrepancies. Three have been proven to be siblings to each other, however, none have been proven to be a child of Isaac.

Isaac Rutherford

Isaac Rutherford was born between 1781-90, which makes it plausible for him to be the father of John and the other children listed below. In 1820-30, Isaac lived in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio. By 1840 he had moved to Jefferson Township, Ross County, Ohio. Apparently unknown to other researchers, in 1847-49, he was living in Davis County, Iowa, where he co-signed an administration bond for John's probate. He has not been found after this date. The list of his suspected children is:

  1. Anson (c.1803) who was born in Kentucky, according to the 1850 census. He married Elizabeth Kyner 31 Jan 1833 in Gallia County, Ohio. In 1840, he was living in Liberty Township, Ross County, Ohio. By 1850, he was living in Jefferson Township, Scioto County, Ohio. Anson has not been found after this census. Anson and Elizabeth had the following children:
    1. Levina J. (c.1833) who married Henry C. Rouse 1859 in Scioto County.
    2. Andrew (c.1835).
    3. Sally A. (c.1837).
    4. Eliza S. (c.1840).
    5. John (c.1842).
    6. Elizabeth (c.1845).
    7. Martha (c.1849).
  2. John (c.1810-1848) who is discussed in detail in the Rutherford Family History. According to his children's census records, he was born in either Kentucky or Ohio. John married Cloa Ann Deavers 08 Mar 1828 in Gallia County, Ohio. He was a head of household in Davis County, Iowa, in the 1847 Iowa census. He died 15 Nov 1848 in Scioto County, Ohio, although he was still living in Iowa. Anson was living in Scioto County at the time.
  3. Joseph J. (c.1812) who married Mary Jane Scott 29 Mar 1837 in Ross County, Ohio. They lived near Isaac in Ross County in 1840 and remained in the area.
  4. male (c.1814).
  5. Jacob (c.1816-1887) who was born c.15 Jul 1816 [some say 13 Jul 1815] in Gallia County, Ohio. He married Rebecca Moore 03 Aug 1834 in the same county. In 1840, he was living in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio. He remarried to Mary Railsback in Wapello County, Iowa, (adjoining to the north of Davis County) in 1846. In 1849-51, they were living in Salt Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa, where Jacob co-signed for an administration bond with Isaac in 1849 and executed the probate of John Rutherford through 1851. Their next home was in Gentry County, Missouri, by 1860. They were in Polk County, Iowa, in 1870, and finally settled in Napa County, California, by 1880. Jacob and Mary had the following children:
    1. Mary Rebecca (1847) who married George McVicor 1864 in Lyon County, Nevada.
    2. Jacob Edward (1849) who married Elcy Lavina Throckmorton 1869 in Polk County, Iowa.
    3. Amanda Jenetta (1851-1863).
    4. Virginia Temperance (1853-1854).
    5. Sarah Ellen (1854-1889) who married Thomas Lawson Barry.
    6. William Thomas (1856-1926).
    7. Wealthy Francina (1857-1858).
    8. David Harrison (1858-1944) who married Daisy Pelly 1888 in Napa County, California, and died in the same county.
    9. George Washington (1860-1861).
    10. Abraham Lincoln (1862).
    11. Anzonetta Caroline (1867) who married William Alexander Sears 1885 in Napa County.
  6. Mary Jane (c.1817-1882) who was definitely a sister of Jacob. She married John Throckmorton 29 Aug 1843 in Ross County, Ohio. Their daughter, Elcy Lavina, married Jacob's son and her first cousin, Jacob Edward Rutherford.
  7. male (c.1819).
  8. William (c.1821) who married Nancy Hughs 29 Jun 1837 in Ross County, Ohio. They were living next door to Anson in Liberty Township, Ross County, Ohio, in 1840. He was another head of household in Davis County, Iowa, during the 1847 Iowa census. In 1850, Nancy and their children were living next door to Jacob in Davis County, Iowa.
  9. unknown (c.1823).
  10. George W. [Washington?] (c.1827) who married Mary Ann Gray 10 Jan 1850 in Davis County, Iowa. The newlywed couple lived next to Jacob and William's widow in Davis County in 1850.
  11. Ellen (c.1828) who lived next door to the widow of John Rutherford and his children in Davis County in 1850.
  12. Samuel (c.1830) who lived with Ellen in Davis County in 1850.
  13. Wealthy (1833-1916) who was definitely another sister of Jacob. She lived with both Ellen and Samuel in Davis County in 1850. She first married James McGahan 20 Mar 1853 in Marion County, Iowa. She later remarried to John Ornbaun 14 Mar 1880 in Mendocino County, California.

The two families of Isaac Rutherford and his son, William, both lived in Davis County next to John in 1847. There were no other Rutherfords in the county.

The 1850 census lists five families which were probably the remnants of the three enumerated in 1847. One was the widow and children of John. Next door was the household headed by Samuel Rutherford, which appears more likely to be a group of siblings rather than a husband and wife. Nearby was a newlywed couple headed by George Rutherford. Next was Jacob and his family. Next door to Jacob was the household of Nancy Rutherford, probably the widow of William Rutherford, and her children.

Uncommon Names in Common

There are many names that appear repeatedly among the children of these individuals. Most are typical names such as John, Andrew, and William, but others are less common.

John Rutherford had sons named Anson, William Harrison, Jacob, and Isaac. Jacob, one of his suspected brothers, had sons named William Thomas and David Harrison, and a daughter named Anzonetta, which is probably the feminized version of the name Anson.

According to census records, only three Anson Rutherfords are known to have lived anywhere in Ohio during the 19th century, so it is not a common name. The oldest is the one discussed here (c.1803). The second is the eldest son of John (1829). The third was much younger (c.1873) but also lived in Gallia County.
