Is Nancy Deavers of Gallia County, Ohio, and Chillicothe, Illinois, a sister of Cloa Ann Deavers of the same locations

The following information was provided to an online genealogy forum in 1996-97 by Jim Humphrey of New Ulm, Minnesota. He shows that Nancy Deavers was born 27 Nov 1801 in Virginia, and she married Raulley McCulley who was born 1796 in Rockingham County, Virginia. They wed on an unknown date and moved to Gallia County, Ohio, in 1828. Raulley died 27 May 1841, and Nancy died 16 Dec 1866 in Peoria County, Illinois. A response to his query by another researcher shows that Raulley and Nancy married in Shenandoah County, Virginia, 26 May 1818, and that the name of Nancy's father was Richard. Humphrey's information/query is currently located at <Rootsweb Archives>.

A list of Raulley and Nancy's children has been derived mainly from the census records which are transcribed at the end of this query. Additionally, this seems to be corroborated by the information provided by Humphrey. Their children were:

1. Barbara Ann (1825-1894) who married Isaac Abraham White in Ross County, Ohio, 9 Apr 1843, according to an LDS Pedigree Resource File. The 1850 census shows them living in Richland, Jones County, Iowa.
2. William Jackson (c.1825) who was born in Virginia, according to the 1850 census.
3. Sarah (c.1829) who was born in Ohio, according to the 1850 census.
4. Rebecca (c.1833) who was born in Ohio, according to the 1850 census.
5. John (c.1835) who was born in Ohio, according to the 1850 census.
6. Joseph (c.1838) who was born in Ohio, according to the 1850 census.
7. Isaac (c.1841) who was born in Ohio, according to the 1850 census.

Clues or Coincidences

A comparison of the Raulley McCaulley/Nancy Deavers family to the John Rutherford/Cloa Ann Deavers family finds several similarities. These are mainly relocations that place both families together at various places at various times. The following is a list of the relevant details:

1. Nancy Deavers was born in Virginia in 1801, and Cloa Ann Deavers was born in the same state in 1810.
2. According to their children's ages and birthplaces, Nancy Deavers and Raulley McCaulley moved to Gallia County, Ohio, between 1825-29.
3. On 08 Mar 1828, Cloa Ann Deavers married John Rutherford in Gallia County, Ohio.
4. In 1840, both families lived in Perry Township in Gallia County.
5. In 1843, Nancy's oldest daughter married in Ross County, Ohio. Isaac Rutherford, who is suspected of being Cloa Ann's father-in-law, was then living here with several of his children before relocating to Davis County, Iowa, by 1847.
6. In 1847, two families who could be connected to Nancy lived in Salt Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa, where Cloa Ann and John were living. The more likely is Abram White who could have been Isaac Abraham White, the husband of Nancy's eldest daughter. The second is the unknown family of John McCaully.
7. In 1850, the widowed Cloa Ann was still living in Iowa. Nancy's family was in an unspecified part of Peoria County, Illinois.
8. By 1852, Cloa Ann must have moved to Illinois since her older children began marrying at this time in Stark County, the county adjacent to Peoria County.
9. In 1860, Cloa Ann and her remaining unmarried children were living in the town of Chillicothe in Peoria County. Nancy and a son were listed in the same town only four pages away on the census.
10. On 27 Aug 1862 during the Civil War, two sons of Cloa Ann and one son of Nancy enlisted in Company C of the 86^th Infantry Regiment from Illinois.
11. On 26 Jan 1865, an unknown Melissa E. McCulley married James Nelson Rutherford in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. James was a son of Jacob Rutherford who was the executor of the probate of Cloa Ann's husband. James is therefore strongly suspected to be a nephew of Cloa Ann and John. If Melissa can be identified as part of Raulley's family, this could become the first concrete link between the two families.

Cloa Ann Deavers and Pure Speculation

Cloa Ann Deavers was born in Virginia and moved to Gallia County, Ohio, sometime before her marriage there to John Rutherford. Since no families with the Deavers surname have been found in the county, she must have been living there with a family of a different surname. The McCulley family could be the answer. In 1820, there was a female in the household who was too old to be a child of Nancy and too young to be Nancy herself, however, she was the correct age to be Cloa Ann. The whole household could have then moved to Ohio after 1825 where Cloa Ann married in March 1828.
