A Serious Conflagration,
- On the night of April 15, 1875, fire broke out in the rear of an unoccupied building on the east side of Main street, just below the public square. Along this row and on both sides of the burning building stood small frame structures of various ages and degrees of dryness. With such material to work upon the rapid spread of the fire was not to be wondered at. Discovered about half an hour before midnight, it had before dawn destroyed the entire row of buildings on the east side of Main street south of the square, and two of those fronting the court-house. The buildings destroyed were a dwelling of H. A. Wright, on the corner, the office of Dr. Hoffmeier adjoining on the east, the shoe shop of Christian Glaman on the south of Mr. Wright's dwelling, the two story building belonging to William Mann, in which the fire started, the dwelling of William Sears, the two story brick of Henry Wheeler, occupied on the lower floor by the boot and shoe shop of M. W. Bell, and above by Joseph Craney. On the south of this building stood another two story brick, used on the lower floor as a grocery by D. S. Sergeant, and above by L. Merritt. The total loss by this fire is unknown, as but one building carried any insurance. With the exception of the office of Dr. Hoffmeier, none of the burned buildings have been rebuilt.

FOUND DEAD BODY FROZEN
From Monday's Daily.
Henry Ernst, 90 years old, was found dead in his home, 1323 Maple street, at 8:30 o'clock this morning, and evidently had been dead since Saturday morning. Dr. R. Dickey, coroner, pronounced death due to apoplexy. The body was frozen. The dead man apparently was sitting on a low stool before the stove in his home, and was building a fire when stricken. He fell backward from the stool, judging from the position in which the body was found. A poker lay by his right hand. Little is known concerning him, except that he lived alone in the Maple street house, and did odd jobs for a living. He was an uncle of Otto and Will Glamann, of near Atchison. He had not been seen by the neighbors since Friday evening; no smoke was seen issuing from the house chimney Saturday or yesterday, and this morning Zach Smith, colored, who lives at 1325 Maple, investigated and found Mr. Ernst dead. His wife died four years ago. Mrs. Johanna Weik, of Good Intent, is a sister-in-law of the deceased. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

MRS JOHANNA WEIK DIED THIS MORNING
Mrs. Johanna Weik, 78 years of age, widow of Christian Weik, died this morning at the home of her son, John Weik, 1130 Commercial St.
Death resulted from the complications common to old age, and came after a year of failing health. Mrs. Weik was bedfast for two weeks before she passed away.
Mrs. Weik was born in Fhurgast [Schurgast], Germany, Nov. 4, 1847. Her maiden name was Johanna Peisker. She came to America when she was about 20 years of age, and shortly thereafter was married to Christian Glamann on Feb. 15, 1874 in Troy, Kansas. Mr. Glamann died in 1879. Later, she was married to Christian Weik on April 30, 1880 in Troy, Kansas. He passed away on Feb. 10, 1911.
Mrs. Weik lived in the Good Intent neighborhood for many years prior to the time she moved to Atchison, in 1922. Here, she made her home with her son, John Weik, until she passed away this morning.
Mrs. Weik is survived by three sons, Otto Glamann, of the Good Intent neighborhood; Will Glamann, of west of Atchison, and John Weik, of Atchison. There are also five grandchildren.
The body is at the John Weik residence, where the funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. F.W.C. Jesse, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church, of which Mrs. Weik was a member, will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon cemetery.
