Barber Family History

Mar 2008

M oses Barber and several of his nephews, Dennison, Herbert, Charles, Edwin, Orrin, and John Barber, each relocated from Rhode Island to Kansas. Of Mayflower and other Colonial ancestry, they were all part of a family that that had remained in New England for well over two centuries.

Moses H. Barber

Moses Hazard Barber was the first of these men to leave New England. Moses was born in South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island, 22 Apr 1833. According to an article in the 1916 book, History of Atchison County, Kansas, by Sheffield Ingalls, Moses first left the East to move to Illinois. After only a few years, he continued on to Kansas prior to the Civil War. When war broke out, he enlisted in the Kansas Militia in October 1861 as a private. Military records show that he was promoted twice, first to Quartermaster Sergeant and second to Regimental Command Sergeant in April 1864, however, he requested to be returned to the rank of private shortly before his discharge in January 1865 at Leavenworth, Kansas.

Immediately afterward, Moses began looking for a place to settle. He stopped for food at the home of the Clark Hubbard family near Parnell in southern Atchison County, and basically never left. Within only a few months he eloped with Mr. Hubbard’s daughter, Mary Jane Hubbard, on 15 May 1865. Because Moses was a Union soldier and Mr. Hubbard was a Southern sympathiser, he never would have allowed the marriage to occur, however, he quickly accepted it after the fact. When his father-in-law left for California seeking gold, Moses purchased and expanded his farm. He was particularly successful growing fruit trees and became known as the "Apple King of Kansas". This farm provided the means for at least six of his nephews to relocate to Kansas, most initially to assist their uncle in farming his land.

Dennison and Herbert Barber

The first nephews known to relocate to Kansas were two sons of Joseph Dennison Barber, one of Moses' older brothers. One son was Dennison Peleg "Tom" Barber who was born 12 Nov 1851 in Rhode Island. His obituary says that he was born in Barbertown, a town named after this family, but its location has not been found. He originally came to Atchison county to teach school in Locust Grove, a town in Mt. Pleasant Township that no longer exists. Although his obituary states that he came to Kansas in 1869, he was still with his family in Connecticut during the 1870 census. Therefore, Dennison probably didn't arrive earlier than the 1870 school year. He was living with Moses in 1875 before he purchased and moved to an adjacent farm in 1878. He then married Laura Speck 08 Sep 1881. They had one known daughter named Nellie M. (1884) Barber who married Fred C. Howard in 1903. Dennison died on the same farm on 31 May 1934 and was buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison, Kansas.

The second nephew was Herbert Lavall Barber who was an older brother of Dennison. He was born in Rhode Island c.1850. He too was still in Connecticut in 1870, so he probably came to Kansas at the same time as his brother. However, Herbert died in 1871 soon after moving to Kansas.

Between 1875-80, two more of their brothers, Charles and Edwin Barber, also arrived in Kansas. Charles White Barber was born 10 Jul 1853 in Rhode Island, and in 1880 he was living with Dennison next door to Moses. He married Ann Elizabeth Bradley on 09 Aug 1882. Tombstone of Charles W. Charles died relatively young on 20 Dec 1899 and is buried in Cummings Cemetery in Cummings, Kansas. Annie lived almost another 50 years without remarrying until passing away 07 Apr 1949. She is buried next to her husband. Charles and Annie had the following children:

  1. Mary Ellen (Ellen) (1884-1970) who married Jay D. Judah in 1930 and moved to Iola, Kansas.
  2. Joseph Leonard (1885-1958) who married Florence Anna Freeman 1906 and died in Atchison.
  3. Frank Clinton (1892-1916) who married Mary Elizabeth Kroll 1913 in Hastings, Nebraska.

Edwin B. Barber, the youngest brother, was born 1866 in Rhode Island. In 1880, he was living with Moses and his family, next door to his older brothers. He married Martha Bell Coffee in 1884. They had one known son named Jesse Edward (c.1887) Barber who married a woman named Golda Leona c.1908. The family moved to Leavenworth where Edwin was a manager in a transfer company named J.W. Parker Company. They returned to Atchison County by 1901, moving to a farm further north in Shannon Township. Edwin died 2 Aug 1929 and his wife 30 Jan 1949. They were both buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison.

Barber Cousins

Also by 1880, other relatives had made their way to the same Kansas county. The widow and two sons of Sanford Barber, another of Moses' older brothers, were living together in Center Township.

The older of these two brothers, Orrin Snow Barber, did not remain in this, or apparently any, area for long. After marrying Samantha Jane Wright c.1889, their first child was born c.1892 in Missouri. They were in Belle Plaine Township, Rush County, Kansas, in 1895. In 1900, they were living in Superior Township, Osage County, Kansas, and remained in the county through 1905. By 1910, the family had relocated again to Little Robe Township, Dewey County, Oklahoma. In 1920, Orrin and Samantha were both living in Wichita County, Texas, with the family of their oldest child.

Orrin died 01 Apr 1929 in either Reno County, Kansas, or Major County, Oklahoma, and Samantha died 05 Aug 1951 in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. They had the following children:

  1. Ethel Mae (1892) who married Thomas E. Snow.
  2. Sanford David (1895).
  3. Martin Wright (1896) who was working as a coal miner in Routt County, Colorado, in 1930.
  4. Elizabeth Florence (1900).
  5. Sarah Alice (c.1902).
  6. Anna Phebe (c.1904).

John Webster Barber, the younger brother, married Amy Adelaide Briggs in 1882 probably in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut, but he returned with his bride to Atchison county where they had the following children:

  1. Frederick Stanton (1883).
  2. Leslie Sanford (1885-1966) who married a woman named Hazel Mae.
  3. Harley Marion (1887-1959) who married Laura E. Patton 1910.
  4. Mary Edith (1889-1918).
  5. Amy Louise (1893).
  6. Herbert Hazard (1896-1975) who married a woman named Addie.
  7. Victor Warren (1900).
  8. Vera Janette (1900), twin of Victor.

Amy died 14 Dec 1938, and John died 16 Mar 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri. Both were buried in Round Mound Cemetery in Atchison County, Kansas.

As previously mentioned, Joseph Dennison Barber was a brother of Moses and the father of four of the young men who came to Atchison county. Joseph was born 31 Jan 1820 in South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island. He married Sarah White on 14 Oct 1844 in North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. Their children were:

  1. Ruth (1846-1933).
  2. Susan Elizabeth (1847-1937) who married a Mr. Miner.

In 1850 and 1860, the family was living in South Kingston, Rhode Island. By 1870, Joseph had remarried to Hannah M. Partello, and the family was living in North Stonington, Connecticut. Although these two towns are in different states, they are in adjacent counties and only thirty miles apart. By 1880, Joseph had returned to Rhode Island and was living in Hopkinton alone with Hannah. He died near here in Canochet on 09 Jun 1897.

Very little of the remainder of this history has been researched or verified by myself. The majority of the data comes from the book, "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations: Vol. 3 - George Soule", compiled by John E. Soule and Milton E. Terry. Other data comes from comparisons of various online compilations with discrepancies omitted here, however, there are probably still minor errors included. Caveat Emptor.

James Barber, Jr. & Elizabeth Barber

The parents of Moses, Joseph, and Sanford were James Barber and Elizabeth Barber. James and Elizabeth were half second cousins, meaning in this case that they had the same great grandfather. [It was not at all unusual at this time for people even more closely related to marry.] James was born 20 Jul 1788 in South Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island, and Elizabeth was born 22 Feb 1792 in Exeter in the same county. They married 06 Apr 1809 in South Kingston, and James died here 08 Aug 1861. Elizabeth died in Exeter 08 Dec 1874. Their children were:

Paternal Line - James Barber, Sr.

Due to the pre-existing relationship, each family line will now be followed for two generations until merging again at the common ancestor, another Moses Barber. Beginning with James' parents, James Barber, Sr. served during the Revolutionary War, and he was married a total of three times. His first marriage was to Ann Mumford with whom he had at least three children. James’ second marriage was in 1748 to Ann Barber with whom he had five known children. 9. Susannah (1764-1845) who died in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, New York.

Moses Barber & Susannah West

This is the point at which the two Barber lines reconnect. The father of both William and Daniel Barber was Moses Barber, although they had different mothers.

Moses was born 1652 in South Kingston, Rhode Island, and he first married to Ann Babcock in 1678 in Kingston. She was born 1665 in Rhode Island and died 1688 in Kingston. They had the following children, including William:

Moses' second wife was Susanna West. Susanna was a daughter of Francis West and Susanna Soule, and a granddaughter of the Mayflower passenger, George Soule. She was born c.1666 in probably North Kingston, Washington County, Rhode Island, which is where they wed on 24 Mar 1691/92. Moses and Susanna had the following children, including Daniel:
