Introduction

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Congress on 30 May 1854. It provided the natural next step for many of these families in their generations-long progression across the continent. Since it occurred at a time when immigration from Europe was beginning to increase as well, many of these people eventually came together in Kansas.
