The Biographical Cyclopaedia of American Women, Vol.1, p.37 In 1824, Robert Milham Hartley married Catherine Munson, who was born in 1804, and who died December 7, 1873. She was a woman of marked physical attractiveness, of medium stature, light complexion, blond hair, and an expressive countenance, enlivened by blue eyes at once significant and penetrating. Industry and economy were conspicuous in [p.38] her care of her family, and conjugal love and tenderness were displayed in a life devoted to the interests of her husband and her children. She was the daughter of Reuben Munson, who served in the War of 1812, and who was born in 1770 and died in Flushing, New York, in 1846. He married Abigail Wilsey (1781-1865), the daughter of Peter Wilsey (1742-1811-1816) of Williamsbridge, New York, and his wife, Margaret Little (1745-1838). The latter was enthusiastic for the success of the Colonies during the Revolution and was a personal friend of General and Mrs. Washington and of Mrs. James Montgomery. Peter Wilsey was descended from Philippe Maton Wilse who came to this country as a representative of the West India Company, and was murdered by the Indians while on a trip of exploration to one of the outlying forts. Reuben Munson was the son of Peter Munson, grandson of William Munson, great-grandson of Samuel Munson, and great-great-grandson of Ensign Samuel Munson (1643-1693), a founder of Wallingford, Connecticut, and a soldier in King Philip's War (1675). His father was Captain Thomas Munson (1612-1683), who settled in New Haven, Connecticut, served with distinction in the Pequot War (1637), was sergeant of the Train Band in 1642, ensign from 1661 to 1664, lieutenant in King Philip's War, and captain in 1676.

I'm interested in finding information about the WILLSEY family in Rockland County, New York. Charles Willsey was my great-grandfather. Charles was born in Rockland Co. in 1846. His parents were John Gesner WILLSEY (b. 15 Feb 1821) and Mary LYONS (b. July 1823, Spring Valley, New York). They were married 2 February 1842 at the the Reformed Dutch Church in Greenwich. I believe, based on the 1850 census and an unsourced family history that John Gesner WILLSEY's parents were John WILSIE (sic) and Elizabeth Hendricks, both of Tappan, New York, married 8 May 1812. Can anyone help me confirm that information? I have no information on Mary LYONS family. Can anyone provide me any assistance here? I believe Charles had 5 siblings: John, b. 1851 Marietta, b. 1855 Peter(?) or William (?) b. 1859/1860 Laura, b. 1870 Ada, b. between 1868 and 1872 The family remained in Rockland County in 1860, and in 1870, all the family except Charles remained in Rockland. In 1880, only the parents and daughters remain. Charles' father is listed as "Captain John G. WILLSEY in the 1880 census, and his occupation as "coaster". Can anyone help me find more information about the ships Captain WILLSEY may have worked on? Can anyone provide information about the whereabouts of John, Peter or William in 1870? Charles is missing from the New York census records in 1870. Charles WILLSEY married Christina (Christine) BUCHANAN on 4 February 1874 in Brooklyn, New York (they were married by Henry Ward Beecher!). By 1880, Charles and Christina had two children: Helen, b. May 1877 Elizabeth Ada, b. 1880 who were living with their mother in Port Kent, Essex County, New York. (Christina and the girls were living with the Elizabeth WATSON family. Their connection to the WATSON family is unknown. Elkanah WATSON, Elizabeth's deceased husband, was a financier who was involved in the development of the Hudson and Erie Canals, as well as the ferry landing at Port Kent). Charles, however, is missing from the 1880 census record in New York. Can anyone help me locate him in 1880? Charles, Christina and their two girls journeyed to Russia sometime between 1880 and 1890 (based on photographs of the family in St. Petersburg, and Charles' passport). The reason for their visit is unknown, as are the exact dates of travel. Any recommendations on how I might find this information? Charles, Christina, Helen, and Elizabeth re-appear in Sandisfield Town, Berkshire, Massachusetts in 1900. Charles and Christina are in Thomaston, Litchfield, Connecticut in 1910. In 1920, Charles and Christina are living with their daughter, Helen, in Manhattan. There is no record of Charles or Christina in the 1930 census; I suspect both of them had died by that time, but I cannot find a death record of either of them. Is anyone on the list related to this family? Are there, perhaps, bible or other records that might be available for them? Has anyone come across grave stones for Christina or Charles? Does anyone know about marriages for Charles' sisters, Marietta, Laura, or Ada? Many thanks for your interest and assistance! Elizabeth

Thank you to all of you who responded to my request about Charles and Christina Willsey. Les was kind enough to point me to burials for both of these individuals in the Palisades Cemetery: Charles Willsey born 1846 married to a Christina who died in 1931 and is buried in the Palisades Cem Christina A Willsey married to Charles Willsey. She was born in 1851 and died in 1929 buried Palisades Cem I believe these are "my" Willseys and greatly appreciate the help. I also received assistance directing me to the NYG&B Record on the Willsey family, as well as the Willsey Family record from the Dutch Settler's Society of Albany. I've now received both of these documents and they have helped me narrow my current questions. So, with new information, I would like to request all of your assistance again. My current challenge is to understand the relationship between Charles' father, John Gesner Willsey/Wiltsie/Wilsey/Wilsie (b. 1852; d. between 1893-1900) and John Willsey/Wiltsie/Wilsey/Wilsie (b. 1792; d. 1852). They are enumerated in the same household in the 1850 Census in Palisades, Orangetown, Rockland County, New York. Based on the surrounding neighbors, I believe they were living in the "Capt. John Willsey/Woolsey House" on Closter Road. Based on this enumeration, the common first names, and an unsourced family history, it's tempting to assume that they are father and son, but I have no proof of that. In 1870, John G. Willsey is enumerated with his family in Nyack (though his oldest son, Charles is not enumerated with the family), but in 1880, he returns to Palisades. In 1880, he is living only with his wife and daughters; none of the sons are enumerated with him. Again, based on surrounding neighbors, he may again have been living in the "Capt. John Willsey/Woolsey House" on Closter Road. As I live in California, I haven't yet been able to review wills or probate records that might help me solve this mystery, nor do I currently have access to Alice Gerard's book, "Historical Houses of Palisades" or "Palisades and Snedens Landing from the beginning of history to the turn of the twentieth century", by Alice Munro Haagensen which I believe would be helpful in my search. Can anyone help me by: Providing any sources that would help me determine the relationship between John Gesner and John? Provide any information as to history of the Capt. John Willsey House, and why the family might have left the house in the 1860's? Many thanks again for your support and assistance!
