Note:
The following data was received, via email, from Taun
Willis (TaunWillis@hotmail.com),
14 March 2000 and is reprinted here with his permission.
---"Thomas Willis who married Mary, of (first)
Lancaster Parish, then later Christ Church Parish,
Middlesex Virginia was definitely not the son of Richard
Willis and Jane Henmarsh. In the genealogical library of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mesa,
AZ, there is a large microfilm record of a collection of
hand written Willis pedigrees recorded in England, which
clearly identifies Richard Willis and Jane Henmarsh's
family, their children, etc. Also, I found a printed book
in the State Capital building archives here in Arizona of
"extinct nobilities" which also has information
on this same family. There are no Willises
living today who can claim descent from this couple. They
were of the minor nobility in England, (baronets), and
the male line died out within two generations following
their deaths. Richard Willis and Jane Henmarsh had
several sons with similar names, including a Thomas who
married Anne Wild(e) and they did have children, but the
names, birthdates, marriages, etc. of those children are
completely different from what we know about Thomas and
Mary's family. In addition, since this family was of the
minor nobility in England, their pedigrees were well
recorded. Richard and Jane had several sons, two of which
also had sons, but that is where the male line ended. At
that time, according to these records, their baronet
titles became extinct.
---I have found several references to "Thomas who
married Mary" as being the son of a "William
Willis of Gloucester", Virginia. When I then checked
the family of William Willis of Gloucester, I discovered
that he did indeed have a son named Thomas. Also, since
Gloucester Parish later formed the backbone of Lancaster
Parish, where Thomas and Mary are known to have
originated, this supports this pedigree. Lancaster Parish
later split to form Christ Church Parish. I have obtained
a copy of the Vestry Book of Christ Church Parish (not
the same thing as the parish record book everyone else
has read), and there are frequent references to Christ
Church Parish being formed from Lancaster Parish. Also,
in an earlier Vestry Book of the parish at Gloucester,
there are a few references to the establishment of
another parish, probably Lancaster Parish. William Willis
is also identified as belonging to that Gloucester
Parish.
---William, whose wife may have been named Mary (or
Pauline? - I'm researching this), was the son of a Henry
Willis described as being the "brother of
Francis." Thus, this Henry Willis is known to have
had a brother Francis. There is a well known Henry Willis
whom the records record was the brother of Francis, Jr.,
the same Francis, Jr. "who returned to England
leaving a brother, Henry, behind in America." There
can be little doubt that this is the same Henry. Henry
and his brother Francis, Jr. were sons of Francis, Sr.,
who never came to America. His line can be traced in
English pedigree records.
---So, I believe this is the correct pedigree. I am
continuing to verify this, but the dates, circumstances,
parish records and familial names are consistent and
support this pedigree.
---By the way, Thomas and Mary had at least three sons,
Richard, Gent., Thomas Jr., and John. Richard, Gent.
married three times and died childless leaving his estate
to the son of his sister Elleanor (which you know). John
lived to about age 30 and died without any mention of
children. Thomas, Jr. is known to have married and lived
to old age since he is mentioned on later parish records
as being an elderly ward of the parish. Thus, I believe
Thomas and Mary's son, Thomas, Jr. was the father of
Richard who married Marthy, who were the parents of Rev.
Joseph Willis. I don't know if your line connects into
these later people, but I thought I would clear this up
since there is a misconception that Rev. Joseph's father,
Richard and the Richard, Gent. mentioned earlier are the
same individual. They are not. The Richard, Gent. is the uncle
of Richard who married Marthy.
---Also, that vestry book I mention contains a very
interesting reference to Richard and his sister Elleanor.
When Elleanor became pregnant out of wedlock, she was
condemned by the parish vestrymen. Based on what I have
read in this volume about similar situations at the
parish, this could have had devastating consequences for
Elleanor and her child, including banishment or death, if
the 12 vestrymen had so ordered. More often than not, the
matter seemed to have been resolved if a large fine was
paid on the condemned's behalf to the church. The 12
vestrymen, including her own brother, Thomas Jr., ordered
that a fine be levied. Elleanor's brother, Richard, then
paid the fine in the form of a large quantity of
cultivated tobacco to redeem her and her child. They were
obviously very close since Richard later left his estate
to her son."---
There is also a theory that Thomas
Willis may have had another daughter named Jane, who
married Thomas Kidd. When Thomas Kidd died, his Will
dated 28 May 1680, appointed Richard Willis and John
Willis to be overseers of his estate and his son Thomas
Kidd to be guardian to his minor children - William,
baptized in Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA; Jane,
baptized 12 Jan 1677; and Mary, baptism date not known.
It is reasonable that son Thomas may have been from a
previous marriage. Willis land lay near Kidd land in the
area of the Dragon Swamp in Middlesex Co., VA, thus,
researchers have inferred that Jane was a sister to
Richard and John. Jane was said to have been born ca 1653
and to have married Thomas Kidd ca 1669. Neither of these
dates are documented, although the marriage date is
inferred from the dates of the children's births. It is
documented that, after Thomas Kidd's death, Jane married
Robert Blackley and they had two children, Robert,
baptized 20 Oct 1684 and John, baptized 24 July 1687).
