SMITH WILLIS (ca 1764-1849)
Submitted by A. Joseph Guffey
guffeyaj@hotmail.com

Born ca 1764, Antrim, Ireland; died 1849, Morgan Co., TN; He migrated as a small child with his parents (thought to be Gedediah Willis of Northampton Co., PA where that name is located in the 1790 US Census). The family settled in Northampton Co., PA from which location he entered the military as a Revolutionary War Soldier serving under Capt. John Craig. Later he moved to York Co., PA, then after a few years, he relocated to Washington Co., VA (southwestern VA) were he married. Said to have moved to Wayne Co., KY in the late 1790s; however, he paid taxes in Russell Co., VA in 1797, '98 and '99. After his wife, Mary McMullen Willis, died in Wayne Co., Ky, ca 1828, Smith Willis moved to Morgan Co., TN where his daughter Elizabeth Willis Guffey resided. He met and married the widow, Eleanor Fulton in 1836 by whom, at the age of 74, fathered a child, David Willis, born in 1838.
Married 1): Mary McMullen, Washington Co., VA; died Wayne Co., KY ca 1828.
Children: (known)
1. John Logan Willis, born 1784, VA; died 1873, Houston Co., MN; married Frances McHenry Wallace in 1818 in Wayne Co., KY. They moved from Wayne Co., KY to Davidson Co. (Nashville), TN; after about five years (1823) they returned briefly to Wayne Co., KY until 1828 at which date, they moved to Ripley Co., IN. After his wife's death in 1869, John Logan Willis moved to Houston Co., MN where he died in 1873.
2. Susan Willis, born ca 1795; died as a child
3. Elizabeth Willis, born 1797, probably in VA, although she reports birth place as KY in Census Records. She married William Guffey in 1819 in Morgan Co., TN where they raised their family of ten children. Elizabeth Willis Guffey died in Morgan Co., TN in 1877.
Married 2): 1836 to Eleanor Fulton, Morgan Co., TN
Children:
4. David Willis, born 1838
Note: This family is well documented and their history is recorded in the 539-page book, WILIAM GUFFEY 1786--ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS AND SOME RELATED FAMILIES, by A. Joseph Guffey, 2nd Edition published in April 2000 by Gregath Publishing Co., of Wyandote, OK. Some of my direct line is found on my website:

I'm interested in hearing from anyone with information or ties to this Willis family--especially with McMullen information or knowlege about the Gedediah Willis connection.

Notes:
On 16 Feb 1790, John and Sintha purchased 600 acres of land from Nathaniel Pearre on the Spring Branch Creek running into Newford Creek. The land was located on both banks of Newford Creek in Pope's District, Wilkes Co., GA; Pope's District was named for their neighbor, Captain Wylie Pope. The family of Syntha Willis also lived in the Pope District. A year later, on 21 Jan 1791, John sold 300 acres of the Newford Creek property to his brother, Thomas Richardson. On 20 April 1791, John and Sintha purchased 500 acres of land from James and Luranar (---) Alford on the south fork of the Broad River, adjacent to Beverdam Creek, Laurance Creek and Golden Grove Creek; all in Wilkes Co., GA. In 1812, John and Syntha (Willis) Richardson moved to Fountain Creek, Maury Co., TN where their son, James Milam Richardson had settled prior to 1810. It was located ten miles south of Columbia, TN.

Pvt Wiley P. Richardson served during the War of 1812 under the command of Col. William Pillows.

John Richardson's will written and witnessed on 5 Feb 1839 bequeathed his estate to Sintha. Funds were set aside for their younger children, Carroll Richardson was given fifty acres of land and provisions were made to sell the estate upon Sintha's deather; the proceeds to be divided equally among John and Sintha's heirs. Wiley P. Richardson and John's nephew, James M. Richardson were the executors of the estate.

In 1838, the year after the Republic of Texas was established, Carroll and Rose Anna sold their inherited land in Maury Co., TN and removed to Ash Springs; a small settlement located near Marshall, Harrison Co., TX. They began the trip in April after the birth of their daughter, Sara Ann (Richardson) Watkins was born.

Anna Richardson and her husband, Henry B. Cannon, traced her brother, Carroll and Rose Anna's trail to the Texas Republic. Henry Cannon received two grants from the Republic: one 640 acre tract at Delta County and another 640 acre tract at Harrison County. Henry & Anna later sold all of the Delta County land and 320 acres of the Harrison County land. The Richardson and Cannons built their north Texas farm homes and raised stock, grain and corn crops and cotton for the next 60 years. Other Richardson and Pullen Family Group descendants immigrated and settled in the northern part of Texas.
