Note: Family tradition and memories of Mary Willis cite her as being half Cherokee. Supporting evidence is being sought. I have been searching Benton Co., AR as well as other areas in vicinity for Michael Willis - cannot find him on 1850 or 1860 census. It is my feeling that he may have been trying to obscure his history, in attempt to obscure his and/or his first wife's Cherokee heritage. He lists different places for his birth on different censuses. I lean toward the 1880 census info as correct. He may even have been enslaved prior to war. Supposition only.
