General Notes:
From the Mayfield Monitor Newspaper, September 19, 1888
Last Sunday two men lost their lives and another crippled near Cuba, in the southern part of the county, by an accident which was the result of sheer carelessness. Seven men were housing tobacco in a barn on the farm of the late Capt. Jas. Wade, near South Mt. Zion Church, one mile and a half south of Cuba. The barn was built of logs loosely put together. It was already nearly full of tobacco. The logs protruded at the entrance owing to the absence of door casings, and while a wagon, bearing tobacco was attempting to enter on the fatal day, the wheel caught on one of the logs, pulling it out. This caused the ricketty building to spread, precipitating the entire loft of tobacco down on the men before they could affect their escape. Two of them, Pierce Caldwell and Robert Baker, were instantly killed, and Bud Wiggins was slightly crippled. Gus McCuan, who was on the ground, and three other men, up among the tobacco, escaped unhurt. Caldwell leaves a wife and seven children. Baker was a single man, 21 or 22 years of age. Both men were buried at Capt. J. T. C. Seay’s, near Lynnville, Sunday.
Franklin married Louisa Jamima Tabitha BROWN, daughter of John B. BROWN and Elizabeth NALL, on 25 Apr 1873. (Louisa Jamima Tabitha BROWN was born on 30 Jul 1849 in Graves Co., KY., died on 9 May 1943 in Graves Co., KY. and was buried in Cuba Church Of Christ Cemetery, Graves Co., KY. 2.)
