General Notes:
Robert joined the 3rd Kentucky Infantry, Co. E, CSA on July 23, 1861. First he went to Bowling Green when that was the headquarters of the Confedrate Army. He was with his commander at the Battle of Shiloh when his captain, Joe Emerson received his death wound. He also served at Baton Rouge under General Brackenridge, and later under General Van Doran at Corinth, MS. He was taken prisoner at vicksburg, MS. There he threw his guns in the Mississippi River to keep the yankees from getting them. After he was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, he was sent to Indianoplis, were he remained a prisoner for 22 months. His prison stay could have been shorter, but he refused to salute the flag or take an oath that he would support the union. He always had to sleep on the ground, and only had one blanket. He had to keep running sometimes to keep from freezing to death at night. When the war was over, he was given $5.00, and a river boat ticked home.
