   General Notes:

Dr. R.A. Canter Sr., one of the first doctors of Graves County, was born on June 11, 1811 i n Rowan County, North Carolina. He was one of five children born to Erasmus and Rebecca (Horn ) Canter, the former from Maryland and the latter originally from Delaware.
In January of 1833, at the age of Twenty- Two, he married Pheobe C. Beeson (1812-1887) and fa rmed in his native state until 1841. During this year he, his wife and children settled in Ca lloway County, Kentucky where they remained for nine years. In 1850 they came to Graves Count y, Kentucky and settled on Terrapin Creek a few miles east of Lynnville. It was during this t ime that Mr. Canter began practicing medicine in the surrounding area and soon became quite s uccessful. He continued to be the leading physician in the community for 34 years, and was on e of the best doctors in the county.
In politics, Dr. Canter was a Republican and was a strong Union man during the war betwee n the states. His firm belief in the union differed from the views of certain men in the surr ounding area whose sympathies were with the Confederate States. So, during the war, he left t he county and went to Mounds, Illinois, near Cario, where he served as a surgeon with a grou p of Nuns in a Union hospital. Two of his sons served in the Fedral Army. They enlisted on th e same day, and were later admitted to the army hospital in Paducah were one of them died o f measles. Dr. Canter returned home in 1865 after the war's end, and in the same year disting uished himsely by successfully treating an outbreak of disease which raged across the souther n part of the county.
In 1873 he bought a farm of 230 acres, not far from his previous home near Lynnville, and s pent his decilining years there with Pheobe. The doctor and his wife were charter members o f the Lynnville Christian Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity.
Dr. R.A. Canter died February 14, 1885. He and his wife, Phoebe Canter are buried at the Ch urch of Christ Cemetery in Lynnville.

Robert married Pheobe C. BEESON, daughter of Richard BEESON and Susan GREGORY, on 17 Jan 1833. (Pheobe C. BEESON was born on 23 Dec 1812 1, died on 30 Apr 1887 1 and was buried in Lynnville Church Of Christ Cemetery, Graves Co., KY. 1.)
