The Family Journey of Conrad and Charlotte Wentz, Pennsylvania

Postal Town of Eldredsville, Township of Forks, Estb. 1833, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania

William J. Eldred, a Forksville Messr(merchant), ran for county sheriff in 1847 on the Whig(future Republican Party) ticket, but lost his bid for the position to his Democratic rival Evan Phillips. The townships of Forksville and Cherry, seeing themselves as more viable and accessible areas for commercial business, waged a heated and lengthy political campaign in 1849 to have county business transacted in one of their two towns, by moving the county seat located in Laporte. County Commissioners, after much debate, decided to leave the county seat at Laporte; however, ill feelings would remain between the two townships. William J. Eldred served as the 1850 census enumerator in the township of Cherry, where Conrad and Charlotte (Martin)Wentz first lived with her parents.

The 1860 Federal Census, the (Wems)Wentz family, Conrad, age 41, and Charlotte, age 31, have left the home of their in-laws, Micheal and Magaret (Martin)Morter in the township of Cherry, and moved seven miles down the road to the township of Forks, Sullivan Co., PA. The area is further denoted as the postal town of Eldredsville.

Conrad (Wems)Wentz, occupation farmer, noted his real estate value at $400 and personal estate value at $170. During the ten year period 1850 to 1860, three Wentz children would be born, Adam Henry(Heinrich) Wentz, age 7, born Sept 22, 1852, baptised October 23, 1852, Sullivan Co., PA, Mary Wentz, age 4, born December 15, 1856, Schuylkill Co., PA, and Caroline Wentz, age 1, born February 9, 1859. Conrad Wentz, age 44, occupation farmer, from Germany, was listed in the July 1863, Consolidated Draft Registry, Forks, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania.

In the June 1870 Federal Census, the (Wince)Wentz family is still residing in the township of Forks, Sullivan Co., PA, however, their postal town of Eldredsville in 1860, has now been moved five miles to the south to Millview. Conrad (Wince)Wentz, occupation farmer, noted his real estate value had increased $600 in ten years to $1000 and his personal estate, was now valued at $300. During the ten year period 1860 to 1870, five more Wentz children would be born. The 1870 Wentz household was noted as Conrad (Wince)Wentz, age 51, Charlotte Wentz, age 38, Adam H. (Henry or Heinrich) Wentz, age 17, Mary Wentz, age 13, Caroline Wentz, age 11, Hannah E. Wentz, age 9, Catharine(Catherine) Wentz, age 8, Jacob A. Wentz, age 5, Charlotte L. Wentz, age 3, and Charles D.(David) Wentz, age 1.
