He has had physcians called several times and has also used patent medicines in large quantities and all without receiving any permanent benefit.
General Affidavit, Dec 25, 1889, state of Kansas, Mitchell County, in the matter of the claim for pension of William J. So I conclude they are either dead or have removed to other places. I received a letter from the post master at Brush Creek,(township of Fairfield, Fayette Co.) Iowa, who informed that parties that I inquired about were not there anymore, that they were either dead or have moved a way and they were unknown to him. Brush Creek P.O. is where I resided when I entered the service and would be the P.O. address of my old neighbors if they were alive and still resided in that vacinity.
From Brush Creek, township of Fairfield, Fayette County, Iowa, civil war volunteers would make their way by wagon to McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa, board boats for a journey down the Mississippi, where they would embark at Davenport, Scott County, Iowa for training.

The witness Silas P. Dove, William H. Padgett and P. S. Response, William J. Little, March 29, 1901, aged 58 years, and whose post office is Glen Elder, Kansas, who being duly sworn, says he cannot furnish positive proof other than now on file in the pension bureau for the reason of lapse of time and defective memories of comrads and death of physicians and others removed to parts unknown to affiant. 1928 Who Remembers "Dad" Little, Writing From California Reader About Old Timer
The following letter was received by the Sentinel (Glen Elder KS paper) last week. The writer is not known by the present editor but the old timers will doubtless recollect.
From Los Angeles, California, February 27, 1928
To Editor, Sentinel, Dear Sir
We have been reading your paper out here for quite a while, and enjoy the home town news, you certainly have a very interesting little paper.
But most of all we enjoy reading of the "early history" and of the facts, concerning early history of those folks that saw the first house and other things that are necessary for the beginning or foundling of a town such as Glen Elder, Kansas in the late 60's and early 70's.
My father-in-law, Wm J. (Bill) Little lived in Glen Elder when the town was first started. He came to Glen Elder about 1870 or 71.
He is now 85 years of age and would like to know if any of the early settlers remember him. The following are some of the facts, concerning early history of Glen Elder.
Dad Little claims he was the first man to do any work in the town, this work consisted of helping Charlie Davis put up the first store in Glen Elder.
A man by the name of "Whip" built a dwelling house. Then "Seidling" built the first blacksmith shop. Then Dad Little says "Vallette" built a store. Later Dad became a cowboy, working for John Schooley who lived on Walnut Creek and boarded at "Gores".
Dad Little remembers when Glen Elder was called the town of New Hampton.
Dad also worked for old Perry Rice, burning lime, also worked for old man Lundy. Dad also remembers when the Indians made the raid on old Glen Elder down by the old mill site. Dad Little lived five miles N. W. of town. Dad was there when the Whites were butchered by the Indians.
He sends his best regard to Glen Elder and all his old acquaintances of the early days and he is still able to enjoy the Sunshine and Roses out here in God's country.
Yours very truly,
Mr. and Mrs. J. Stevens.
(Son-in-law Joseph F. Stevens and daughter Ramona Cuba Little Stevens)

Daughter Ramona Cuba Little's only child, son "Early" or Earl, born sometime between and 1916 and 1925, was raised by Rebecca and Julius from birth to the age of 4 when he died suddenly from complications of Mastoiditis.
From health-diseases.org "Mastoiditis most commonly affects children. Before antibiotics, mastoiditis was one of the leading causes of death in children. Now it is a relatively uncommon and much less dangerous disorder. Coalescence of the mastoid air cells may precede rupture of the tympanic membrane. Streptococcal mastoiditis is generally preceded by early rupture of the tympanic membrane and copious otorrhea."
From Cousin Service "When Early died Hoolier wore a red bandana around his head and did some sort of an Indian ceremony. He and Rebecca were raising the boy and thought of him as their own. Aunt Alva claims that Hoolier went off the deep end about losing the boy." Early may be buried as Earl Rivera in the RoseHills cemetery in the Rivera family plot. His grave location has yet to be determined.
Cousin Service recounted Rebecca and Julius also helped to raise their granddaughter Alva Pearl Moro, born Feb 16, 1916 CA, for a brief time in 1918 when she was about two. Ada Leon and husband Stojan were considering divorce at the time, but later reconcilled. When granddaughter Alva went back to live with Ada and Stojan, Rebecca and Julius took it very hard.
From Cousin Service "Grammy" Rebecca was a Pentecostal holly roller and whenever we visited her there were many religious pictures. I think Hoolier was a mailman in his younger days because he had his hats hanging in the garage."
From Cousin Service "When we were younger and visited grammy and Hoolier, it was him and not her that was the host. She always sat in her rocking chair and Hoolier was the one making coffee and passing out pieces of pie. He was much more talkative than she was. I think I mentioned before that he referred to her as "Mama". He really idolized her and doted on her."
Julius Antonio Rivera, born July 4, 1875, CA, mother and father born US, died August 30, 1957, Los Angeles, CA.
From Cousin Service "After Hoolier passed away Rebecca lived with Mae and Mona. I guess the TV was on one night and she came out and accused them of having men in the house. I think they were watching Maverick. They all had a good laugh over that one."
From Cousin Service "Rebecca fell out of her peach tree. She always canned her own jam. I guess she really went down hill after breaking her hip."
Rebecca Amanda Rivera died October 5, 1963, a resident of San Gabriel Valley, California for over 51 years and a La Habra, California resident for the last six years of her life dying at the age of 92 years. The 1963 death certificate of Rebecca Amanda Rivera, indicated she had been living with her daughter, Ramona Thompson of 10831 Grace Ave., La Habra, Orange Co., CA, at the time of her death at Parkcrest Convalescent Hospital, Fullerton, Orange Co., CA. Rebecca Amanda Rivera died of an aneurism of the abdominal aorta, condition for 6 months, and generalized arterial sclerosis, condition for 6 years.
Rebecca Amanda Rivera is buried along side her husband Julius Antonio Rivera, in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA. Interment is at Sunrise Lawn, Burial Section 4, Lot 3037, Grave Niche 4, Entrance Gate 19.
From Cousin Service "When the Wentz's originally left Pennsylvania it was about 1870. They went to Glen Elder with a number of other farmers. There is mention of the Pennsylvania Dutch coming to that area of Kansas and settling there. One story grandma Ada used to tell is that her mother, Rebecca, had red hair as a child and when they went to get supplies from the nearby fort, the Indians wanted to barter for her because they were so taken with her. Of course her parents said No! My grandmother Ada could speak a little German and I wonder if she picked that up from her mother Rebecca.
From Cousin Service "The only things I can remember "Grammy", Rebecca, saying to us children was "Hi honey", and "would you like a cookie". Most of the time we played on her lawn while our parents visited inside."

"San Diego staged this Exposition in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. San Diego would be the first American port of call north of the Panama Canal on the Pacific coast. An exposition would call attention to the city and bolster an economy still shaky from the Wall Street panic of 1907. In 1910 San Diego had a population of 39,578, San Diego County 61,665, Los Angeles 319,198, and San Francisco 416,912. San Diego's scant population, the smallest of any city ever to attempt holding an international exposition, testified to the city's pluck and vitality."
"After five years of unrelenting effort, San Diego celebrated the official opening of the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park on January 1, 1915 . At midnight , December 31, President Woodrow Wilson, in Washington , D.C. , pressed a Western Union telegraph key. The signal turned on every light on the grounds and touched off a display of fireworks. The gates to the Exposition swung open. A crush of from 31,836 to 42,486 people on the grounds cheered, waved banners, threw confetti, sang "I Love You California," and snake-danced their way to the Isthmus, or fun street.1 "
