SECOND GENERATION

3. Martin WEIDRICK was born on 10 Dec 1820 in Alsace. He died on 3 Sep 1900 in Hagersville, Ont., Canada. He was buried in Hagersville, Ont., Canada. Martin and Caroline lived at Springvale, Ontario. In 1987 the red brick house they lived in was still standing. The 60 acre farm is now part of an airstrip. They say Martin used to knit socks and sell them.

He was married to Caroline MEHLENBACHER (daughter of Lewis MEHLENBACHER and Wilhelmine LINT) on 4 Nov 1845 in Haldimand Township, Ontario. Very little is known about Lewis and his wife, Wilhelmine Lint. Lewis was a plain man, not much of a churchman, and not too popular. His wife was characterized only as a "good woman". His place of birth is unknown, but there are records of Muhlenbacher's from Rheinland Ottweiler as far back as 1649. There seems to be a number of family still living there and the surrounding districts today.
Originally the name was spelled Muhlenbacher, various interpretations might be given of it's meaning, among them are: a mill by the brook; a miller by the brook; the "er" at the end of the name identifies the person with a certain place, in this case, the Millbrook. In English we would say, he is a Millbrooker or a man from Millbrook. It is established that when Lewis left Germany other members of the same family emigrated to New York and Pennsylvania. Wilhelmine had a brother who emigrated earlier to Haldimand County and may have been a factor for moving to Rainham Township from Dansville, NY. The early years of their establishment in Haldimand must have been very difficult, for they brought nothing with them. Almost ten years were spent in gathering sufficient means to secure land of their own. Lewis and Wilhelmine puchased some 28 acres in the south west quarter of Lot 4, Concession 4, Rainham, which was registered August 20, 1845. Lewis married a second time about 1842 after the death of Wilhelmine, to Cahterine Kramp and had one son Benjamin, and possibly two daughters Elizabeth and Sophia. It would appear that following the first generation, the spelling of the name was changed from Muhlenbacher to Mehlenbacher, that being the one used today. Caroline MEHLENBACHER was born on 2 Jun 1826 in Germany. She died on 16 Dec 1896 in Canada.
