Muscatine county IA – Register of Old Settlers Book One - CENTER GROVE, Fulton Twp., Aug. 5th, 1880.

The following notice of James Schoonover, who departed this life in Fulton township, on the 3d, inst., has been handed us for publication:Mr. Schoonover was born in Randolph county, Va., September 17, 1806. Was in good health and bid fair to live to the good age of his father, who was 104 years at his death. December 26, 1829, deceased married Elizabeth Teeter, and in the spring of 1839 left Virginia for Iowa with his wife and five children, floated down the Kanawha river in a canoe with his family and goods to Parkersburg, took steamboat, unloaded his canoe five times on the way, jumping mill dams as he came to them and exposing himself as no one would dare do to-day. Landed at Rock Island May 15th, 1839; settled on Black Hawk creek, Scott county, where he lived four years; buried his wife while there, April 21st, 1840. Of the hardships the early settler endured we know but little. Having a family of five motherless children to care for, and suffering for months with chills and fever, deranged from those terrible headaches, so that he even lost his reckoning and found himself lost to the day of the week; falling through a temporary bridge over the Black Hawk he broke three ribs. These are some of the trails he had to endure. For his second wife he married Thankful Randall, at Center Grove, and whose wife was killed by the falling house by that tornado that passed through the Grove June 4th 1844.

In 1843, Mr. S. settled in Fulton township, or what was then included in Montpelier township, Muscatine county. He had four children by the present wife, only one living Benjamin, who is now on the old homestead, which is a fine, well improved farm of over two hundred acres.

The first house he built at the Grove was the one in which the first school in the township was taught, and was used for meetings. It stands to-day shingled by his hands and doing good service. The lumber of which it was made he rafted from Wisconsin pineries.

He was interesting in conversation, particularly so in relating incidents that occurred during his frontier life. He was not much of a hunter, yet his wife says one morning before breakfast he killed two deer and one wolf. He gave but little attention to politics, yet the old records of 1845 show that he was then acting as Justice of the Peace in Montpelier township. He was liberal, particularly with his church, where, aside from his family, he will be sadly missed. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. C. Haskell, in the Center Grove M. E. Church, of which denomination deceased has been a member for the past 56 years. Having given his heart to God at seventeen years of age.  In the death of Father Schoonover the wife has lost an effectionate husband, the children a kind an loving father, the church a faithful co-worker and Christian, the community a good citizen.

Randall Conducted Funeral
"Prior to Mr. Barland's arrival Thomas E. Randall had delivered Methodist discourses at Eau Claire and conducted the funeral of Mrs. Simon Randall, performing these duties in the absence of regular ministers, for he, like the other members of the community at the time, was engaged in lumbering. Later in life he wrote and published an excellent history of the Chippewa Valley. The first wedding in Eau Claire was that of George W. Randall & Miss Mary La Pointe of Prairie du Chien, which took place at the residence of Stephen McCann, where the bride had been engaged as housekeeper. A justice of the peace was imported from Chippewa Falls to conduct the ceremony but Thomas Randall was called upon to pronounce the blessing."

Accidently Shot- Simon Randall, 22 July 1875, Fall Creek, Eau Claire, WI

Mr. Simon Randall, of Fall Creek, met with a very serious accident last

Tuesday (20 July 1875), by having the contents of a rifle discharged into

his thigh.  The rifle was standing between the two uprights forming the

support for the chimney, when a young child groped to it, and pulled it down

on himself.  Mr. Randall went up to extricate the child, and taking hold of

rifle barrel pulled it towards him, when the hammer, it is supposed, caught

against the corner of one of the posts between which the rifle previously

leaned, discharging the contents into his thigh.  The charge entered on the

outside a little above the knee joint, and striking and shatering the bone,

glanced and passed out a few inches below the hip.  The bone is said to

have been broken in four pieces at least, perhaps more, and so displaced

that the limb has contracted considerably.  Dr. Galloway, who was called,

found the patient so nervous and sensitive that it was impossible to set the

bone, or even probe the wound; and his age (being nearly 60 years old), and

state of health, together with his previous habits of life, made it too

unsafe to use chloroform.  For these reasons, amputation is probably out of

the question; and for the same reasons, his recovery may be considered very

doubtful. Later -- Mr. Randall died last Thursday (22 July 1875) afternoon.  He is

buried at Eau Claire on Saturday. A special train will leave Eau Claire, eastward on

Saturday evening.  So,  those attending Simon Randall's funeral can return home.

History of Chippewa Valley page 196-197
Simon Randall chose for his bride one of the Indian maidens of the forest, but however securely the nuptial knot was tied, they were not to remain long united. Death stepped in and claimed the young wife for it's own only a few months afterward. The funeral sercvice was performed by Thomas E. Randall, brother of Simon.
A Pioneer Settler – Eau Claire County
The first Fourth of July celebration was held on the Simon Randall farm (across from the old Fair Grounds) which he had purchased from William Young.  An old fashioned time was held -- a dance of which Alfred Bolton played the fiddle.  Allen Randall, the son of Simon, and who later lived in Augusta and served as assessor for many years, is claimed to be the first child born in the newly organized Town of Bridge Creek.  This celebration on the 4th of July was one of the early and important social events.

Mrs. Simon Randall, Fall Creek, born in Germany, is a daughter of Philip Ehrman; came to America in 1848. Resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, for one and one half years; lived in Eau Claire, Wis., for five years and was married there to Simon Randall, Dec. 25, 1851; then resided at Augusta for a long time, and came to Fall Creek in 1873. Mr. Randall died July 22, 1875. He was the first settler in Eau Claire, built the first saw mill there and ran it for several years, and was for many years prominently connected with the lumbering interest of the county. Built the only grist mill at Fall Creek. Mrs. Randall resides with her children at Fall Creek. She has living, eight children -- Allie, Simon, Jeremiah, Olive (now Mrs. E. P. Brown), Louisa, (now Mrs. J. A. O'Brien), Cora, Ida, Tamerlain, and there are two dead, Sarah and Frank.

Simon B. RANDALL, Sr. was born in the Town of Baldwin (now Sebago), Cumberland County, Maine, on 1 January 1817. He was the youngest of seven children born to John and Sarah RANDALL. His father, John, was a Baptist minister, as well as a lumberman. Simon attended school at St. John's Academy, and after completing his education, joined his father in the lumbering business. In 1838, Simon and his brother, George, decided to try their fortune in the far west. They worked their way to Muscatine, Iowa, where their older brother, Thomas, was engaged in farming. After a short stay in Muscatine, they moved on to Wisconsin, attracted by the lumbering.
Simon and George found employment at the Spring Creek Mill on the Chippewa River, working hard to raise capital and becoming partners in several businesses. In 1846, their firm, McCann, Randall, and Thomas completed a dam on the Eau Claire River in what is now the city of Eau Claire. The company store was located where the Uniroyal Company store stood (now Banbury Place). A mill and other buildings were also constucted at the same site, only to have the entire operation, plus 10,000 sawed logs, swept away by a flood on 5 June 1847. Although the dam and mill were rebuilt, Simon realized that he and his brother lacked capital to fully develop the firm, and decided to get out of the business of manufacturing lumber. He sold his interest in the mill to his partners. Simon married Louisa EHRMAN, a German immigrant, 25 December 1851, and a son, Allen, was born in 1852, reportedly the first white child born in the settlement. Simon purchased timber rights in an area north of Fall Creek, east of County Road "K", and moved his family into the woods. Simon, Jr. was born while the family lived here. Later, the family moved to a cabin on the North Fork of the Eau Claire River where more timber rights had been acquired. In the spring of 1857, Simon purchased a farm in the Town of Bridge Creek, just west of Augusta. Not only was he interested in good farm land, he also needed a place to keep his oxen and horses during the summer. His children, Ollie, Jeremiah, Cora, Louisa, Frank, and Ida were born during the years the family lived on the farm.
Simon and George continued to log during the winter on Muskrat Creek and the North Fork of the Eau Claire River, taking their logs down the river and selling them in Eau Claire. In addition to buying timber rights, Simon bought land when it was available. In 1870, he turned over the farm near Augusta to his son, Allen, and purchased 600 acres of farm land on the edge of the village of Cousins (now Fall Creek). He also bought the combined boarding house, tavern, and stopping place for the stage on the old Sparta Road. Eight horses were kept ready in the barn for the stages coming from Augusta and Eau Claire. His son Lennie T. was born here. In 1873, Simon decided to build a grist mill at the site of the falls on Fall Creek, just north of the village. The dam was completed and the mill was waiting for machinery when Simon was killed in an accident in the tavern. Loaded guns were stacked in a corner of the tavern and he was shot by one that was knocked down and accidently discharged. He died 22 July 1875, and was buried the next day in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire, the city that he helped build and which had honored him and his brother, Thomas, by naming the two high hills on the north side of the Eau Claire River -- Mount Simon and Mount Tom. Simon was a good natured man with a free and easy way that always attracted people to him. When he lived in Augusta, he conducted services at the Baptist church and at Hales Corners when no other minister was available. He was a generous man; no one who appealed for aid and was deserving ever went away empty handed. He was an energetic, ambitious businessman and his perseverance overcame the most disastrous misfortunes.

            History of Northern Wisconsin, 1881

GEORGE W. RANDALL, lumber manufacturer and farmer, town of Ludington, was born in what is now the town of Berwick (formerly Baldwin), Cumberland Co., Me., March 1, 1820. Lived there until 1839, then went to Iowa, where he remained until 1840, when he came came to Menomonie, Wis. He was engaged in working on the river and in the woods until 1846. Then he, with his brother Simon, built a saw-mill on the Eau Claire River, within the present limits of the city of Eau Claire. June 6, 1847, that mill was carried away by a freshet, and they built another mill on the same site. In 1851 or 1852, Simon Randall sold his interest to Philo Stone and William Hope. These gentlemen, with George W. Randall, carried on the manufacture of lumber until 1857, when they sold out to Carson & Eaton. Since that time Mr. Randall has been engaged in farming and logging, until he built his present mill, in 1880, on Muskrat Creek, in the town of Ludington. Feb. 1, 1881, he commenced running it, and will cut during the season about 1,000,000 feet of lumber, considerable of it being oak and ash. He gives employment to eight men. Mr. R. was married, Nov. 29, 1846, to Mary La Point. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn. They have ten children - George W., Mary, Wellington, John, Isaiah, Sarah H., Josephine, Abraham Lincoln, Thankful and James. Lost two children; they died in infancy.

Histories of Eau Claire Co.WI - Eau Claire in 1854
Logging Engages Settlers
"Logging in the adjacent woods engaged the settlers during the winter. Lacking a means to dam the river and build a mill, the surviving McCann brother and Thomas were hopeful that someone with money would come along and join forces with them for the purpose of effecting these improvements: and that is what occurred, the capitalists being Simon and George Randall. The story of how the built, and how together with a large store of logs, it was swept away by floods had been told in a preceding chapter, which also tells of the building of mill on the opposite side of the river by Gage, Dix, and Reed in 1847, and of the rebuilding of the mill on the Eau Claire by Philip Stone, H. Cady and Simon & George Randall."

In 1845, Stephen McCann and Jeremiah Thomas built a shanty near the site of what was later the Eau Claire Lumber Co. water mill and a cabin at the junction of the two rivers to they were considered the first white settlers.  Their object was to build a sawmill and float the lumber down to the Mississippi and so on down to markets.  Simon and George Randall joined them later and the first saw mill McCann, Randall and Thomas built along the river was completed in 1846 but was destroyed by a flood in the spring of (18)47.  They couldn't afford to rebuild again but in (18)47 and (18)48 it was rebuilt by Randall, Stone and Cady.  Millwrights were recruited by McCann from as far as Connecticut and Mrs. Vern Bullis' grandfather and his brother came here from Connecticut at this time.  Interesting to note is that they came by ox team.

A Pioneer Settler
In 1878 Mr. Julius Stubbes family moved here.  They crossed the river in a ferry boat.  Some of the early settlers were John Randall, George Randall, Bill Tarbox, A. B. Hoakom, Henry Hepburn, and a Gibson family.  A. B. Hoakom built the first mill on Hay Creek.  George Waterberry bought the mill, then Stubbes bought the mill from Waterberry.  That mill burned down and the Stubbes lost about 500,000 feet of lumber.  They built a new mill.  It was run by steam engines.  Two years later it burned down.  In another year he had a new mill.  It is still useable.  After the lumber was sawed Stubbes hauled it down to the Eau Claire River.  Then they floated it down the river below where the Fall Creek bridge now stands and sold it to the farmers.  George Randall had a sawmill at Muskrat Creek.  In 1894 there was a flood and the dam went out and Stubbes lost some logs.

Register of Old Settlers – Muscatine County IA - On the morning of April 11, 1888, at the residence of Mr. H. A. Hollister, near Wilton, Miss MARY HANSON, entered into rest, aged 75 years and 21 days. Miss Hanson was born in Waldo, Kennebeck county, Maine, March 21, 1813. In the year 1839 her father emigrated to Iowa and settled in Muscatine county, on new land, two miles south of Durant, the farm now owned by C. W. Norton. The family came all the way with horse teams, a tedious journey of three months. For many years past Miss Hanson’s home had been in the family of her sister, Mrs. H. A. Hollister, sharing the cares and toils of domestic life, uniformly unselfish and cheerful, distributing the seeds of kindness, and living to rejoice in the precious fruitage of a life well and wisely spent. Miss Hanson loved her Bible, and rested her hope on the sure foundation, Jesus Christ, himself being the chief corner stone. The inspiring light of that life will not soon go out in that home, and her example of patient continuance in well-doing will be an unfailing power for good in the hearts of those who knew her best. Notwithstanding her age Miss Hanson had enjoyed a good degree of health until six days before her death. A severe attack of pneumonia, attended with great suffering, ended her earthly life as above stated. Appropriate funeral services were conducted at the residence of Mr. Hollister, by Rev. E. P. Smith, at 2 oíclock, Friday afternoon.
