Mary was my maternal great grandaunt and an older sister of my maternal great grandfather John Henry Ames

 

Some records show this surname as Moorhead or Morehead while

Samuel himself signed his name as Moorehead on son Luther's marriage record

 

Mary Ames wife of Samuel Moorhead was found under the following names:

Marion, Mary Ann and Mary Elizabeth Ames all which turn out to be the same person.

 

In early census records with her parents Mary was known as Marion/Marian or Mary Ann

while later records when she married she was known as Mary Elizabeth Ames Moorhead

1.    Mary Ann “Marian” Ames born Dec 1851/52 most likely in Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York where her parents were still living until just before 1855 census was taken. Mary died 11 April 1929 Marble, Itasca, MN married Samuel Moorhead born 13 Aug 1832/3 Ohio who died sometime after the 1905 MN state census was taken (cousin Gail). Mary Eliazbeth married 2nd after April 1915 to her stepfather John P. Westover.

 

Obit dated 20 April 1929 page 5 - Itasca County Independent - Grand Rapids, Itasca, MN - Mrs. Westover Dies April 11 - Resident of Marble Since 1923; Buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Sunday - Mrs. Mary E. Westover died on Thursday, April 11, at her home in Marble from cancer of the lip at the age of 86. She was born in 1843 in New York state and came to Minnesota with her parents in 1855 (ICH: she with parents still in Illinois pre census 1860). She was married to Samuel Moorhead in the year 1869 and to them two sons were born, namely, William of Elysian, Minn. and L.E. Moorhead of Marble. In the year 1914 (ICH: 1915) she was united in marriage to John P. Westover, also deceased. Mrs. Westover is survived by her two sons and two sisters; Mrs. Godlfred Lutcher (Letcher) of West Concord; Mrs. F. O. Crandle (Crandall) of Park Rapids, two brothers, one in Canada and one in Hastings, Minn., also 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She has lived in Marble since 1923. Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church Sunday, April 14, by Rev L.S. Sloan in terment being made in Lakeview cemetery at Colearine. William Moorhead of Elysian was here to attend the funeral of his mother.

 

NOTE: by Irene Clough Hahn on Mary Ann (Ames) Moorhead Westover : Census records show William Ames family listed on 9 Sept 1850 in Randolph, Cattarausugus, NY. They had no daughter listed with them which would mean Mary Ann was born after the census was taken. She was the oldest daughter of William Ames and Lucinda "Lucy" Moon. She could not have been born in 1843 or 1849 as stated in above obit nor could she have married in 1859 as she would have been only 9 years old. Her parents were still in state of Illinois in 1860 and didn't get to MN until around just before 1870. Mary's second husband John P. Westover was also the 2nd husband of her mother Lucy Moon Ames. John was about 20 years younger than Lucy., this may be the reason she didn't give her real age. Lucy died April 1915 and Mary must have married him not long after. The two sisters and brothers listed in her obit are also the children of William Ames and Lucindia "Lucy" Moon Ames and sisters of my great grandfather John.

Post-Bulletin, Rochester, MN - Monday, March 17, 1980 page 26 - Kenneth Moorhead of Rochester Dies - Kenneth S. Moorhead, 70, of 902 10th Street N.E. a retired Post-Bulletin composing room foreman, died Sunday at his home of complications from a heart condition and cancer after being ill the past two years. He was born March 22, 1909 in Park Rapids, Minn., and was reared in Pine Island. he began his printing career while a Elysian, Minn., school student and was a printer at the Hopkins, Minn. Review before moving to Rochester in 1928. He joined the Post-bulletin in 1929 and married Margaret Saholt on Nov 26, 1930 in Rochester. Mr. Moorehead became foreman of the composing room in 1960 retiring from that postion in 1973. He was a member of the Local 819 International Typographical Union for more than 25 years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Merlin (Jeannine) Schendel of Paris, Ill. and Mrs. Gary (Diane) Neumann of Rochester; a son Kenneth H. Moorhead of rural Oronoco; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph and Arnold, both of Rochester; and a sister, Mrs. Raymond (Daisy) Schultz of Springfield, Ohio.

Rochester Post-Bulletin - 25 Jan 1994 - Cathryn Moorehead of Rochester dies - Cathryn Marie Moorehead, 80, of 210 13th St. N.W., a retired Rochester Methodist Hospital employee, died Monday (Jan 24, 1994) at St. Marys Hospital. Cathryn Marie Hunter was born March 30, 1913, in Lime Springs, Iowa. She married 1st Dean H. McCullough Feb 25, 1931, in Le Roy and he died in 1943. On Oct. 6, 1963, she married Arnold S. Moorehead in Rochester. Mr. Moorehead was a dietary chef at Rochester Methodist Hospital. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1982. Mrs. Moorehead moved to Rochester from Le Roy in 1955 and was employed at Rochester Methodist Hospital from 1958 until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Rochester Senior Citizens. Survivors include four sons, Donald E. McCullough of Spring Valley, Jack L. McCullough of Eyota, Dean H. McCullough of Carlton, Minn., and Richard J. MCullough of Pine Island; two daughters, Betty Jean (Mrs. Erling) Birkholm of Waconia, Minn., and Barbara Kay (Mrs. Ronald) Putratz of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; 19 Grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by twin sister and a grandson. the funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ranfranz Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Buller of Homestead United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery

Obit - Grand Rapids Herald-Review - 12 Jan 1950 - page 7 - Burial Rites Held - Luther Moorhead age 71, passed away at the Itasca county hospital on January 3 after a lingering illness. Burial services were read from the Peterson chapel in Coleraine. Interment was in the Coleraine cemetery. He was born in Dodge county, Minnesota and had lived in this community for a number of years. he was employed for nineteen years as a painter for Oliver Iron Mining company. He married Clara Bortle in 1902 at Park Rapids. Mr. Moorhead is survived by his wife, who makes her home in Bovey, and by six daughters, Mrs. Wilbur Rydstrom, Mrs. Lillian Lenhart and Mrs. Mabel McCann of Storm lake, Iowa, Mrs. Rena Bischoff and Mrs. Edna Young of Arbo and Mrs. Effie Affield of Trout lake and eighteen grandchildren. Those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Rydstrom, Mr. and Mrs. George McCann and Mr. and Mrs. Fay Lenhart, all of Storm lake, and Mrs. ary Norris of Grand Rapids.

Obit - Grand Rapids Herald Review, Itasca, MN - page 9 - 3 June 1974 - Services held for Clara Moorhead, 86 - Funeral services for Clara Ethel Moorhead, 86, Coleraine, were held Saturday, June 1 at Peterson's funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dean Carlson officiating. Interment was at Lakeview cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Bischoff, Dale Ogden, Dean Moorhead, J. Hugh Young, Gerald Young and Herbert Young. Mrs. Moorhead was born Sept 23, 1887 in Barnsville, and had lived in this area for the past 51 years. She died Wednesday, May 29 at the Itasca Nursing Home. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Urban (Rena) Bischoff, Marble, Mrs. Ervin (Effie) Affield, Grand Rapids, Mrs Mabel Gwin, Coleraine, Mrs. Lillian Lenhart, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. Eva Rydstrom, Sioux City, Iowa. There are 29 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and numberous great-great-grandchildren.
