Norwood The Jones-Hawkes-Austin Families page 329 Mercy Jones, oldest child of Lemuel Jones and Waite Estes, was born "at North Yarmouth, the 15th of the 5th month, 1752, new style"; 27th of 7th month, 1771, married at "Friends meeting at her father's house, at Harpswell, Cumberland Co.," Nathaniel Hawkes, "of Windham, County of Cumberland", born 8th month, 31st 1740, "Old Style" in Marblehead, County of Essex, Province of the Massachusetts Bay; son of Ebenezer Hawkes, Jr., (b. 14 July 1702), of Marblehead, and Anna Breed, b. 28 July 1706, (P. 29 Windham Mo. Mtng. Records; p. 37 Durham Mo. Mtng. Records. Descendants of Thomas Cushman Nathaniel Hawkes settled in Windham, on the Highland Cliff Road. He descended paternally from three Mayflower passengers of 1610: Isaac Allerton, Senior; his wife, Mary Norris Allerton; their daughter, Mary, who married Elder Thomas Cushman. Quaker records of the Falmouth Quarterly Meeting marriage of: Nathaniel Hawkes of Windham, in the County of Cumberland, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England, Shoe Maker, son of Ebenezer and Anna Hawkes of Marblehead in the County of Essex in Said Province; Ebenezer being deceased; and Mercy Jones, daughter of Lemuel Jones and Waite his wife, of Harpswell, 7th month 27th, 1771. Just who our first shoemaker was we cannot tell positively; but it may have been Nathaniel Hawkes. He came here before 1771. Mr. Hawkes settled in the easterly part of the town, not far from the Westbrook line, and is said to have been a quiet, industrious man, and a worthy member of the Friends' Society." He built a log house and settled on a farm left him by his father, situated in Royallsborough (now Durham), ME. He was a very powerful minister in the society of Friends. He d. in the year 1822. Rachel born June 29, 1788 6. Rebecca born May 29, 1790 The Douglas Genealogy; descendants of John Douglas of Middleborough, MA, the first of this branch in America by J. Lufkin Douglas 1890 page 68-69 David acquired a liberal education for the opportunities afforded in those days, and was an active business man. He taught servral district schools, in his own and adjoining towns. He was clerk of Friends' monthly meeting at Durham for many years. In 1806 he bought one-half of his grandfather's farm in Durham, in which he paid the sum of two hundred dollars. It was the half of Elijah Douglas' homestead now owned by Thomas Philbrook, where he resided serveral years laboring on his farm and making bricks. In 1809 he bought a farm in Brunswick of Caleb Estes, for which he paid nine hundred dollars. On this farm he had a windmill where he ground corn. The farm is now owned by James H. Cox. He lived at one time in a schoolhouse that stood near his farme's farm which was afterwards owned by Jesse Crosman. About 1816 he removed to Windham; 1829 returned to Durham; 1834 or 35 removed again to Windham where he died. He married 2 Oct 1834 Lucy, dau of Isaiah and Deborah (Philbrook) Day. He begun preaching among the Friends at the age of 22, and has been for half a century the principal minister of the Friends in Durham. His labors have been very satisfactory at home and aboard, and have resulted in great good. He has visited nearly every yearly meeting of Friends on this Continent. He located on the Pone Road, about two miles from the South end of China Lake. Meetings were held in his house from 1802 until 1807-9 when Pond Meeting House was built.
