from cousin Mike Meloon 24 July 2005:
During my recent trip to New England, I stopped at the Rockingham County Courthouse in NH to look over the land records. Interestingly, I found two land records under Enoch's name. One is apparently misnumbered since I could not find the deed. The otheris contained in book 106, page 449, in which Enoch Meloon of Portsmouth sold to Joshua Avery of Stratham a certain piece of land in Stratham. The deed is dated 30 January 1775 and although the land is defined by the lands surrounding it, also included is the statement"... four acres and one half of land situate in said Stratham, being one half of nine acres of land which my father, Joseph Meloon, Jun'r. purchased of the heirs of Jude Allen...". Joseph Meloon, Jr. was the son of Joseph Meloon who was the son of Luke Meloon who married Hannah Clifford in 1677 at Hampton. I also found a deed in York county, ME in which a group of persons, including Mary Meloon, widow sold a parcel of land in 1813.

Taken by Indians to Canada 11 May 1754, Nathaniel Meloon and his wife Rachell were sold to a French priest, who permitted them to live together, and Joseph their youngest son, was born in captivity in 1755. After remaining prisoners four years and seven months, Meloon, his wife and Joseph his youngest child, were put on board a vessel bound for France, but were taken by a British cruiser on the Grand Banks, and carried into Falmouth, now Portland, ME from whence they travelled on foot to their home in Stevenstown, NH. Their youngest child captured, Sarah, died at St. Francis in Sept 1754. Their oldest boy captured, Daniel, and their oldest daughter, were left in Canada by their parents. The boy was redeemed in July 1761, as appears by a petition of the father presented to the Governor and Council and the Assembly dated 12 March 1762.
See NEGSR vol 11 page 307-309 for details about Nathaniel, his wife Ranchell and three of their children taken by Indians.

The Maloons page 195
The last of the Maloons died on the Town Farm, and were taken fram a house that belonged to Major Avery, in Stratham, long since gone to firewood or dust. It stood, when I was a boy, on the road that leads to Stratham from Amos Davis'. At one time they lived in a house just above Elias Wentworth's, on J. Clement Weeks' land. The family originated on the land called the "Maloon Field" next to John Porter Weeks' land.

Mr. J. Clement Weeks wrote me that "one of them went away and brought home the small pox." They all took it, and all died except Mark, and were buried up in John Porter's pasture across the railroad, and their graves can be seen to this day. Mr. Weeks also wrote that Mr. Maloon and his wife were nice people. He was the butcher for this part of the town. If any one wished kind thing done, he was ready to do it. I well remember how he used to pat my head and say, "The little man grows every day." Peace to his ashes, he lived to a good old age, and died as aforesaid.

There was a time when the Maloons paid as high a tax as any of the Weekses, and the Maloon field is the best land on the Weeks farm - now belonging to Mrs. Elinor Wentworth.

The Family Name
The actual origin of the family name is not known. It has been subject to a great many variations, the most common having been Maloon and Meloon - the double "o" being the identifying characteristic. It is not uncommon, however, to find the spelling as Malloon, Maloone, Malowne, Malune, maluin, etc., and any of the preceding with a "Me-" prefix. It is also common to find the name in documents spelled Malone or Melone. Similar names such as meloin or Maloan apparently have a French origin and generally are not intermingled with the Maloon/Meloon family. It would appear from the time of the earliest mentions up to the American Revolution that the "family" name is Maloon and Meloon is a variant. The Meloon line was concentrated in the New Hampshire seacoast region (Dover, New Castle, Portsmouth, Greenland) with a secondary grouping in the Meredith and Moultonborough (Lake Winnipesaukee) area of the state. Maloon lines occur during this period in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

One of the first prominent mentions of the name in the United States is a marriage between Luke Maloone (Hampton, NH Vital Records thru 1900, p576) or Luke Malone (NH Historical Society, Dover, NH Marriages) to Hannah Clifford on 20 Sept 1677. From this union, most of the Maloon/Meloon families can be tracked (with some speculation) to the present day. Several references are made to a Hendrick or Huybrick Maloon as the father of Luke. Both were apparently on the tax lists of "Bloody Point", NH (later Dover) during this period and Hendrick apparently witnessed a deed in a land transaction in 1660. It is most possible that Hendrick and/or Luke immigrated to the New Hampshire area about 1650.

The name occurs outside the United States. For example, there is a Maloon tea plantation in Nepal. How it obtained this name is unknown, whether the owner or manager carried the name or simply used the name. There are Maloon families living today in Australia and South Africa. From whence they came to these locales or from where is unknown. There exists, in the Provice of Ulster (now Northern Ireland), Tyrone County, Barony of Dungannon, Parish of Derryloran, and only a few miles west of the town of Cookstown, the Township of Maloon. A Township in Ireland is an area of land which is farmed by a number of families. Some Townships are quite large with thousands of acres, others are less than 100 acres. The Township of Maloon is silightly larger than 164 acres. British surveys and census listings indicate that a common surname for the area is M'Aloon with variations of M'Loon, M'Loone and M'Lune. (According to my sources, the original spelling was with a horizontal line over the "M" creating a "Mc" sound. The colonizing British, having no such symbol, changed the horizontal line to an apostrophe.) These examples, however, are relatively recent (generally post 1750) and cannot compare with the documentation of the name in the United States as early as 1677. The one thing common with the above examples is a history of British settlement, colonization, and influence.

A somewhat far-fetched theory ascribes the name as French, citing the inhabitants of St. Malo, France. These inhabitants were great sailors and the conventional wisdom of the time was that sailors from St. Malo were apt to be found in any pot of the world. This theory provides that outof-the way islands, like St. Malo saliors, are apt to found anywhere and were thus known as "Malo_ons". The transition to "Maloon" is inevitable.

There is probably no doubt that the name is English in origin. David Hackett Fischer has written a book titled "Albion's Seed - Four British Folkways in America", Oxford University Press (1989). The book describes and explores four distinct "waves" of immigration to the United States from Britain between the years 1629 and 1775. The primary interest for our family is the description of the immigration of Puritans from East Anglia (that area of Britain east of London and close to the English Channel) from 1629 to 1640 which coincided with the period known as the "eleven years' tyranny" during which Charles I tried to rule England without a Parliament, and Archbishop William Laud purged the Anglican church of its Puritan members. During this period in excess of 21,000 persons left the East Anglia area for the new world. It should be noted that this was part of a greater migration. At least 20,000 sailed to the West Indian island of Barbados, Nevis, St. Kitts, and the forgotten Puritan colony of Old Providence Island (now a haven for drug smugglers off the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua). The emigrants were, however, for the most part, from East Anglia.

The proximity of East Anglia to the English Channel and the Low Countries of Holland and Belgium, together with the undoubted legal and otherwise contact between the two areas, may hold the key to the family name which is indicative of "flemicization" or a spelling which includes the double "oo", perhaps corrupting a name such as "Malone".

It is most likely that Hendrick (Huybrick) or Luke Maloon, bearing some equivalent to the current name, may have emigrated from East Anglia to the Colony of Massachusetts (which loosely covered the area between Connecticut and Maine) at some point before 1650. Their presence in the United States thereafter is certain and the lines of descent are fairly well documented.

At some undefined point (but before 1755), the family began to split unto MALOON and MELOON lines. It is difficult to determine when this split began to formalize since early spellings frequently shifted between the two (and others). Early United States census records often change a family spelling every 10 years, and legal records are equally unreliable. The spelling began to stabilize around 1850, perhaps with the increase of literacy, and few changes occur after that date.

The family in the United States seems to have begun in New Hampshire, then spread slowly to Maine and Massachusetts. Sizeable groups have appeared in upstate New York, central Florida, California, and through portions of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Individual families are situated throughout the United States in locaalities too numerous to mention but the basic name of Maloon or Meloon remains unique.
