Chickasaw County, Iowa, GenWeb Project "The death of Eliza S. Boyd, wife of Phillip Boyd, occurred last Thursday, Feb. 4, 1904, her age being 71 years and 9 days. She was born in Spafford, Onondaga county, N. Y. in 1833. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. One girl, Belle, died some years ago. There are left, also, three brothers--E.D. and -- Ripley, of Rockford, Ill. and Charles Ripley, of Durand, Ill. A son, Albert Boyd, attended the funeral from Durand, Ill. The services were held Sunday at the Methodist church, Bassett, conducted by Rev. C. C. Casper and the interment was in the Deerfield cemetery. Mrs. Boyd had for many years been a resident of Basett [sic] [and] was one of its most prominent woman [sic]. She took much interest in public and charitable works, being up to her death a member of the W. R. C. Her departure is mourned by relatives and old friends alike." Obituary New Hampton, IA Gazette April 6, 1908 Phillip Boyd was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1831. At the age of 17 he removed to Kishwaukee, IL where he was married to Miss Eliza Ripley. Four children were born to this union; albert of Bassett, James of Dixon, Neb., Phillip of Laona, IL., and a daughter Mabel Belle, who died in early childhood. In 1864 Mr. Boyd enlisted in a regiment of IL volunteer cavalry and served his country until honorably discharged at the close of the war (Civil War). the remaining years since the war he had lived in Nebraska, charles City and Deerfield, and for the last ffew years made his home in bassett. He was a great sufferer but bore his burdans manfully until March 31, 1908 when the angel of deaath called him to join his beloved wife, who preceded him in 1904. He was a kind father and husband and a friend to all. The funeral was held at the M.E. church of which he had been a member for years and burial was at Deerfield. Boyd was born near Durand, IL, Aug 7, 1858. He came to Iowa, with his parents, when a small boy and lived here until early manhood, when he returned to IL, where he was united in marriage with Miss Louise Bartlett, on June 30, 1880, and engaged in farming for several years. To this union was born three children; Henry P. Boyd, Mrs. Nellie Zimmerman and Mrs. Mabel Duncan. Mrs. Zimmerman preceded him in death on June 6th, 1935, and Mrs. Boyd in April, 1930. He is also survived by two brothers, James A. Boyd of Sioux City, and Phillip Boyd, of Rockford, IL, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the I.O.O.F. at Durand, IL, retaining his membership to the date of his death. Mr. Boyd returned to Bassett with his family in 1904 and has made his home here since that date, engaging in bee raising and gardening. He was substitute mail carrier for twenty-two years and often walked over the route, through winter storms, that the patrons might receive their mail on time. He has been less active for several years, due to a series of strokes, each more servre until the last which occurred on December 20, and from which he did not regain consciousness until his passing on Dec 29, 1935. characteristic of a long and useful life was his thoughtfulness of others, and especially was this true as affecting the welfare of his family to whom he was a devoted husband and father, and in his desire ever to smooth the way for them. Funeral services conducted January 1st at the Congregational church at Bassett, Rev. G.A. Hess, pastor of the First christian church of Charles City officiating and interment was made in Mount Carroll cemetery near Bassett. William Ripley was born in 1869 in Illinois. On June 25, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated him 39th in Straight River Township.
