Most Churchi(e)lls today are descent from four different branches of Churchi(e)lls. The first was our own Josiah Churchell who was in Wethersfield as early as 1637. Some claim John Churchill of the Plymouth branch was first, however the Plymouth branch of Churchills were not in America until 1648. Next came William Churchall branch of Manhattan, NY and the Virginia branch. If Josiah, John or William Churchill were brothers or related is not known, nor has it been proved yet today that they even knew each other. To set the record straight, we are not related to the famous Winston Churchill line as many would like to believe. We are descended from Josiah Churchell of Wethersfield, Connecticut and his wife Elizabeth Foote. As of today we still have not found proof of parents of Josiah or where he is from..
Josiah or Josias Churchell as he spelled his name, was born in England about 1615, was in Wethersfield early but not among the first settlers. He must have come to Wethersfield at an earlier date and was living there in 1638 when he married Elizabeth Foote daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming who were among the founders of Wethersfield. The following is our direct lines from Josiah to Jotham Churchill my maternal gg grandfather who was in Minnesota by summer of 1857.

Notes: 1. Porter Genealogy, John of Windsor pg 107 History of Wethersfield, Vol II page 221 The property on which Joseph lived was inter. from his father and appears to be the home lot described as belonging to Josiah Churchell under date of Dec 1659... In the inventory of the estate of Joseph Churchell his home lot is mentioned as consiting of three acres which would indicate that he passed his life on the homestead given to him by his father. At the age of 30 he was one of the town surveyors; three yeaars later his name appears as one of the listers or assessors; in 1684, he was elected a collector of taxes. In 1689 he was chosen constab le; again in 1695 as lister; at the annual town meeting held Dec 26, 1698, Segt. Churchell was re-elected selectman and was serving in the capacity when he died Apr 1, 1699 at the age 49 yrs. Mary his widow lived to an advanced age as an inventory of her estate was dated July 4, 1738. February 9, 1712/13. I, Josiah Edwards, of the town of East Hampton, in the County of Suffolk, husbandman, being sick in body. I leave to my sons, Josiah, Joseph, Churchill, Jonathan, David and Nathaniel, all my lands, meadows, and rights in Commonage, both at home and at Montacket, with all the privileges. I leave to my wife Mary, and to my daughters Martha, Mercy and Mary, all my movables, both indoors and without. And if my wife lives, and does not marry, then she is to have the improvement of all my lands till my children are of age. My sons are to be put out by my executors to learn suitable trades. If my wife lives till my sons are of age, and they see cause to make improvement of my house, so that she cannot comfortably live in it, then my sons are to pay her £18 yearly. I make Annanias Conkling, Lewis Conkling and my brother, Thomas Edwards, executors. Witnesses, Samuel Barnes, Nathaniel Barnes, Baker. He was a Private in Capt. Peter Schuyler's Company in albany in 1692 and died about 1721. His will dated Feb. 9, 1712/13 and proved Aug. 8, 1721 named Ananias Conkling, Lewis Conkling, and his brother Thomas Edwards as executors. The last named refused to act and letters of Administration were granted to the eldes son, Josiah Edwards. In that instrument, Josiah mentioned his sons Josiah, Joseph, Churchill, Jonathan, David, and Nathaniel and his wife, Mary (NY Hist. Soc. Col 1893 page 236). It is evident that Mary (Churchill) Edwards, after the death of her husband, returned to CT with all of her children except the eldes, Josiah, Jr. Early Easthampton Wills. This was in the vicinity of what became, New York side of the river, called Cochecton. A Family Odyssey "The CT Churchills and the Settling of America 1635-1900" by Malcolm H. Churchill When Giles and his family settled at the forks of the Delaward in 1751, it was unbroken wilderness. By 1765 however the growing white population threatened to inundate the area and the Indians decieded to resist. By this time five more children had been born to Giles and his wife. Warned that the warriors were assembling the Giles Churchills place the mother and younger children on their one horse and their sole sack of meal on their cow and hurried away. Looking abck, they saw the smoke from their log cabin as the Indians burned it. The family made its way to MA probably the Churchill book suggests taking shelter with relatives of the husband or wife. Giles died in 1771 about 53 years of age, in Florida, NY. Farmington, CT was the home of William's first wife, and it was where the family lived until their 1769 departure for the Wyoming Valley. William had eleven children altogether, five boys and six girls all whom married except for the eldest daughter Jemima. A Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. He was a deacon in the Baptist church for fifty years. A Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. Churchill 1999 In abt 1798 William, Jr. moved with his wife and first born son to Homer, Cortland, NY. Homer is part of what is called the Military Tract, which was created in 1789 by NY State so it could pay its Revolutionary War soldiers in land. Soldiers who chose not to settle their land were allowed to sell it. About 1814 the family moved near Marietta, (present day Washington co.) OH, Ohio's earliest pioneer settlement, where they lived for nineteen years. By then they had had thirteen children, seven of whom had died. The three oldest of the six surviving children were married by the time of their next move in 1834, to Fabius, St. Joseph, MI. One of the married children Adna, and the two younger ones, Rhoda and James accompanied the parents to MI. 1800 Federal census Scipio, Cayuga, NY William Churchill male 1/-/1 females 2/-/1 1810 Federal census Scipio, Cayuga, NY William Churchill males 3/1/-/1 females 2/1/-/1 1850 Federal census Fabius, St. Joseph, MI 11 Sept William Churchill living with son Randall Children of William and Jane: 126.96.36.199.7.1 Joseph Dell Churchill born 29 July 1797 died 9 Aug 1851 Pineville or Richmond, Izard, AR married 28 March 1827 in Arkansas to Lucretia Bocock born 28 Oct 1803 VA188.8.131.52.8 Mary Churchill born 6 July 1773 Wyoming Valley, PA married 1790 Lucius Atwater of Berlin, CT he died 1867 Berlin, CTA Family Odyssey by Malcolm H. Zenus and Almyra had an unnamed daughter born and died on 17 Nov 1811 and an unnamed son born 21 Aug 1825 who died soon after birth. After Zenus and Almyra were married in VT, the two moved to Holland Purchase, NY. There through great privation reared a family of twelve, three of whom died in infancy. In 1837 they with their family, moved to Kane county IL. They arrived on 3 July 1838. They passed through many hardships connected with a new country. they lost their son Daniel to disease. Also, David was drowned at the Isthmus, now the Panama Canal, while returning from California on 2 March 1854. According to Guy Hall, David drowned within sight of land. Many of the others on the boat swam ashore, but David could not swim. He had gone to California in the gold rush of 1849. According to Guy, he did quite well. It is unknow what happened to his gold if in deed he was successful. In Nov of 1867, the children being scattered, Zenus and Almyra with Anjulina, moved to the West. Born in Ireland and a resident for a time in Newfoundland, Canada, Cherry established a 300 acre farm along the Niagara River. The farm once included Rattlesnake and Strawberry Islands as well as land that later became Wickwire Steel and Buffalo Slag Companies. The old farmhouse, which served variously as a school, church, and tavern stood near River Road for over a century. Here lived Moses Cherry and his grandson, Town justice Charlise R. Cherry. Few people are aware that there was at one time a burial plot on the old Hamilton Cherry farm, River Road. What is now the property of the Buffalo Slag Company was a part of the original farm. Between the railroad track, which runs to the Wickwire plant, and a large pile of slag on the east side of the road, a burial plot containing several graves was a well known land-mark as late as the year 1880. 1870 Federal census Tonawanda, Erie, NY 3 Aug P.O. Notes from "Our Churchill Ancestors" In spring of 1815 John and Sylvester Churchill moved to Portland, Chautaugua, NY and built a log house on the south end of their purchase, cleared a few acres and returned to Cortland county, NY. In Feb 1816, Sylvester removed his family from Cortland county, NY in company with David House, his wife's brother. Sylvester sold his share of the farm in 1826 to his brother John, and bought the north part of Lot 62, Township 4, where Daniel Churchill later owned, which Sylvester sold to Jared Taylor in 1835, and moved in 1836 to Streetsboro, Portage, Ohio. In 1845 they moved to Montville, Geauga, Ohio and on March 8, 1849, to Munson, Geauga, Ohio. Sylvester's daughter Martha married Ira Warner. John House, in Cortland county, N. Y., Jan. 9, 1816. Mrs. C. was b. in Homer, Cortland county in 1795. Sylvester and John, his bro., came to P. in 1814 and purchased p't of lot 38, T. 5 &endash; 114 acres, - land now owned by E. P. Wilson and Dea. A. L. Blowers. In the spring of 1815 Mr. C. came to P., built a log house on the south end of his purchase, cleared a few acres, raised a crop of corn and returned. In Feb. 1816, he removed his family in company with David House. The goods of both families were packed upon a single wagon and drawn by an ox team. The hardy energy of the pioneer women was in some sense manifested in the wives of these two emigrants, in that they walked nearly the whole distance in the midst of winter from the Genesee river to P. Mr. C. sold his farm in 1826 and bought the N. p't of lot 62, T. 4, which he sold in 1835 to Jared Taylor and removed to Ohio. He is now living at Munson, Geauga county, that state. Mrs. C. d. there May 26, 1850. Mr. C. was a member of the first Congregational church formed in this town. In early life he was a democrat but now a republican. 1850 Federal census Munson, Geauga, OH 12 Aug Sylvester Churchill age 61 farmer born VT Orville Churchill age 31 farmer born NY Sarah Churchill age 29 born PA Levi Churchill age 25 farmer born NY M.E.
