ICH: All dates, godparents names and town
names in Germany were copied from church books at Langenschwarz, Germany near
Schlotzau, Hessen, Germany in 1987 by my husband Ernest Hahn,Jr. and his 1C1R
Martin FINK, both great grandsons of Nikolaus 1.1. We have no other information
on any other HAHN family that came to America. Karl HAHN 1.1.4 was only
surviving son in this family to marry and come to America. An old family letter
written by Karl HAHN dated 10 Dec 1900 "I left for America on 13 Nov 1900
and arrived at port 22 Nov 1900". Karl stayed with his aunt Anna Barbara
HAHN ALTSTADT in Minneapolis, MN until his marriage.

Karl Hahn in a letter to his mother dated 10 Dec 1900: Dear Mother! Our
ship leaves the habour of Germany on 13 Nov 1900 at 3:00 P.M. Were all fine but
after 3 days I get seasick. My aunt was the only one who went to lunch. At
night we had a big storm. A propeller gets broken, so takes our voyage 10 days
instead of 7. I had a nice neighbor in my cabin and he shares with me 3 bottles
of wine. At the 8th day comes a Amercian Port Pilot who takes the ship through
low places but we run aground and have to wait 9 hours until some divers were
coming and helped us. After these problems we reach New York port on 22 Nov
1900. The next day he arrived in Minneapolis with his aunt. (I don't think they
reach Minneapolis in a day. ICH) We got our suitcases with us and nothing went
broken. My clothes were very dirlty so Berta, Georgs wife, washed, cleaned and
ironed my clothes before I can wear them . Georg has not much work and so he
introuduce me his 3 brothers. He also introduce me with Herr Stein (Mr. Stone), he has a daugther, she is
16 years old and she weight 250. I haven't found work yet perhaps later. In the
wintertime it is very difficult to find a job. What about my papers mother? If
I don't get them I can't come back to Germany. Here is it very nice. I hope
you're all well. I'm fine too. Best regards, your son Karl Hahn - Best wishes
to Johannes and August.
When Karl Hahn lived in Minneapolis before his marriage he lived with his aunt
Anna Barbara Hahn Altstadt. Karl had his painting business listed at 410-16th
Ave No. Minneapolis, which was the home of the Altstadts. Sometime in the winter of
1916 not long after Anna Barbara died Karl appears to have lost contact with
his Altstadt cousin. I've a copy of a letter from cousin George
Altstadt
to the Fink family in Germany which stated they do not know what became
of Karl but would try to find him. After this letter was written they found
Karl living with his wife's family.

Anna Barbara's Godmother was Anna Barbara HAHN her grandmother.
Johann Altstadt, husband of Anna Barbara Hahn started manufacturing
lemon beer in 1875 at their home in Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN. He also
manufactured soda water between 1876-1881. His major competitor was Rudolph
Nauer and by 1884 Nauer's superior salesmanship and advertising had driven Altstadt
out
of business.
Ernst Fink in 1987 in letter to me: says Aunt Anna Barbara Hahn Altstadt
was the
oldest sister of Nikolaus Hahn, who in turn is the father of Karl Hahn, who already by about 1885
had left for America and who married an Altstadt over there. She had
emigrated from her village about a year earlier. This Aunt Anna Barbara came
back here (Germany) for a visit in the summer of 1900 and took Karl Hahn with her on her return to
Minneapolis where she lived. That period was a time when many people left
(emigrated from) Germany for America in search of work, luck and eventaully
wealth. That this was infact more illusion than reality.

Area of
Hessen Germany our Hahn family came from... Queck, Schlotzau and Burghaun

Following
is picture of the Vockenmuhle front view in Burghaun in 1987
We were able to locate my
husbands lines in Germany with the help of an old letter dated 1929. This
letter was written in German. This letter had never been translated until late
1970's and again in 1982. The letter was written to Ernest Hahn and his sister
Dorothy, telling them of the death of Karl Hahn's mother Katharina Helena Koch
Hahn on 8 Mar 1929. This letter had an return address from Margaretha Hahn
Fink. I wrote to the civil record office in Hunfeld, area in Germany where the
letter came from at that time. The civil records officer got in touch with
Ernst Fink and from there we had contact with the family. We were very lucky
the family still lived at the Vockenmuhle.
The following I quote from
letters from cousin Ernst Fink
to me starting in 1982 and other old letters I have. All letters from Ernst
where in German, I had them translated to English until his granddaughter took
over letter writing for him in 1984 and came to live with us in California as
an exchange student for one year.
Nikolaus Hahn acquired the Vockenmuhle (name of the
farm) 1 Nov 1893 in Burghaun, district of Hunfield. The Vockenmuhle stood here
as a corn mill since before the year 1500.
On 30 March 1900, Nickolaus
Hahn died and his son-in-law Hans Georg Fink husband of Nickolous dau
Margaretha Hahn took over the Vockenmuhle in 1901 along with many debts. With
much hard work the Vockenmuhle was constantly rebuild.
When Hans George Fink died 5
June 1930 his wife Margaretha Hahn Fink took over the business, the mill,
farming operation and a small saw mill until 1940. Since that time Ernst Fink
son of Margaretta has been owner-proprietior. Ernst says, in spite of heavy
bombing of West Germany during the war, there still were 16,800 mills, now only
1,460 remain. In ten years probably only 300 to 350 mills will remain.
In 1948 Ernst Fink built a water-driven completely new
style (modern) electrical power plant at the Vockenmuhle. It was one of the
most modern in Hessen and Ernst run it as a hobby. While Ernst owned the
Vockenmuhle he developed a water power generator to supply electric from the
streams by means of turbines which supplied the farm and the town of Burghaun
with electric. The power plant was operated right at the house.
In 1964, Ernst built a modern
efficient sawmill which he sold. Then so that his children might earn good incomes
more easily, Ernst bought the sawmill back again. The land which belonged to
the Vockenmuhle was sold to Ernst son-in-law in 1981.
Ernst says he had five
vacations (jobs); mill over-seer, master of the sawmill (master Millwright), landlord,
electrical operating engineer (stromerzeuger) and mills/hydro-electric
supervisor. After Ernst Fink died 13 Aug 1998, the Vockenmuhle was sold a few
years later as no one in the family wanted to take over his work.
