information on Benajah Hiatt Spencer can be found in the book "Genealogical sketch of the descendants of Samuel Spencer of Pennsylvania PA" by Howard M. Jenkins 1904 Benajah left the family residence in Indiana about the time of his marriage and moved to Buchanan, MI, entering the business of furniture manufacture. In 1891 he removed to Benton Harbor, in the same State, and resides (1902) at this place, being President of the Spencer and Barnes Company, manufacturers of furniture.Mr. Spencer was a cabinet maker and furniture manufacturer in Berrien county MI he was also a Quaker/Presbyterian.

Greenleaf Glidden husband of my maternal gr gr grandaunt Mary Jane
Ames has not been an easy task. The first time I saw his name, he was
called "Gridley Glidden" husband of Mary Jane Ames in the will of
Mary Jane's father, Josiah Ames.
In September 1999, after posting a query on the internet, I received my real first lead that Gridley was same person known as Greenleaf Glidden. Also learned about the Charles Glidden book in which Greenleaf is listed as son of Ira Glidden 1796-1861 and Betsey Farwell 1802-1869. This information was from Jon Spencer of St. Joseph, MI whose line is from Greenleaf and Mary Jane's daughter Betsey Ann Glidden Spencer.
I figure that Greenleaf and Mary Jane married in Randolph, Cattaraugus, NY as this is where Mary Jane's mother Mary, was living with her son William, my maternal gg grandfather at that time. Mary Jane's father Josiah Ames had died in 1841, a year before she married.
Seven years after Mary Jane's father died her brother William filed a petition to prove Josiah's will on 7 March 1848. William says Gridley and Mary Jane Glidden were living in Kishwaukee in county of Winnebago Illinois. This may be wrong as Greenlief bought land on 30 March 1847 in Stephenson county Illinois which is next to Boone county Illinois. In Winnebago county Illinois, Mary Jane's older sister Chloe Ames wife of John T. Smith was living with her family. It's possible that William didn't know Mary Jane and Greenleaf moved from Winnebago county.
The Berrien County, Michigan Directory of 1892 shows Greenleaf Glidden a laborer living on South Portage in Buchanan township.
The Michigan 1870 census also shows Mary Wetsel Ames widow of Josiah Ames who were the parents of Greenleaf's wife was living right next door in the Ashbery Glidden household. Mary Wetsel Ames is listed "Ames, Mother (Mary) age 95.
