While doing research on my husband's maternal Feinstein family line I would often find info on the Isadore Gandel family. Perhaps putting what I've found here will help our cousins out there searching for their lines. My husbands connection to the Gandel family is his maternal great grandmother whose name was also Sarah Pliner/Pleno. Our Sarah married Adolf Feinstein. Isadore Gandel's son Simon M. Gandel who died in 1984 showed his mother as being a Feinstein on his death record? See Feinstein family for more information.

Back in late 1980's I was exchanging information on this family with Susan Van Lindt who at that time lived in Oregon. Over the years we lost touch with each other. Susan had a copy of Isadore Gandel's passport written in Old Russian in which it named his wife and says she was 50 years old, lists children and says that they are set to leave and that the passport is given a stamp. 1. Isadore Gandel (Itzko Leybov Hendel) born ca 1841 Russia died ca 1910 Mott, Hettinger, ND he was buried on prairie near his homestead, however family tradition says in 1950's his son Martin had his body removed to a Jewish cemetery in Fargo, Cass, ND. I'm not aware of the cemetery's name. Isadore married in Russia to Shyindley “Sarah” Pleno/Pliner/Pleaner/Pleener who was also called Sarah on census records. Sarah was born ca 1851 in Russia died 22 Dec 1943 Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN buried Russian Brotherhood cemetery. She was living with her son Louis Gandel at 1234 Knox Ave N., Minneapolis, MN when she died

Final rites for Mrs. Sarah Gandel, 92, 1234 Knox Ave. N., a native of Russia and a resident of this city for 38 years, were held at Zeesman chapel Dec. 24 with Rabbi Nahum Schulman officiating. Burial was in Russian Brotherhood cemetery (ICH: West Side Hebrew Cemtery in St. Paul, MN) Mrs. Gandel, who died Dec 22, is survived by five sons; Louis and Martin of Minneapolis; Joseph of Piedmont, Calif., Max of Los Angeles, and Simon of Richmond, Calif; a daughter, Mrs. Ben Lichtenstein, Los Angeles; 27 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchilden. 1943

(ICH: I tried to get records of the cemetery listed above before we moved to Arizona in 2002. We could not locate the cemetery record keeper. We could never get ahold of anyone to help. My husband great grandmother Sarah Pleno Feinstein is also buried in this cemetery.)

Information on West Side Hebrew Cemetery: Southernmost gate, rows north of the road about 6 rows to the south of the road and originally incorporated in 1883. Portion also includes the old Russian Brotherhood Cemetery. The rows south of the road and about 8 rows north of the road are part of this cemetery. This cemetery was connected to four congregations, merged in 1963 as Adas Israel Synagogue, 2377 Edgcumbe Road, St. Paul, 55116. The congregations were the Highland Park minyan, Agudas Achim, Chevra Michnal Ashkinaz, and Sons of Israel. The cemetery records research through West Side Hebrew Cemetery, 2575 Doswell Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55108.

age 97, formerly of Minneapolis, MN, passed away March 18, 2006, in Indianapolis, IN. Born October 6, 1908, Milan, Kragero Township, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by parents, Hannah and James Olson; husband, Leonard R. Gandel; daughter, Heloise (Gandel) Burck; son, Merrill Gandel. Survived by loving grandchildren, Tara (Gandel) and Peter Hudson; Jodi (Gandel) and Greg Klein; Rebecca Burck; Leonard and Sandy Gandel; great-granddaughters, Alaina and Alesha Klein, Sarah Hudson Razo; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth (Olson) Kleven; daughter- in-law, LaVon (Gandel) Prosser; son-in-law, Philip Burck; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and many friends. Ella was a 1927 graduate of Milan High School, where she was a member of the undefeated Girls' Basketball team. Ella moved to Indianapolis, IN, in 1992, where she has many dear friends. She loved family, music, travel, and the Indiana Pacers. She was a member of Richfield Lutheran Church in Richfield, MN, and King of Glory Lutheran Church in Carmel, IN. Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 24, 2006, at Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue, Mpls., MN 55408.
