Jones born ca 1844 died when young women The following is from cousin Peter Robinson: Irene, The following is excerpted from a Robinson family history compiled by Ruth Margaret Robinson Kelley for Paul Robinson, her brother/my father - probably in the 1930's or 1940's. My Aunt Ruth's words are in italics. I have added the other material. ROBINSON My gg grandfather William Robinson was born in 1783 in Bath ME. In 1809 he married Keziah Andrews in Leeds ME. Keziah was from Leeds, born in Littleborough ME in 1786. Their five children were: John (One of John's children was Orlando who sold a liniment called O M Robinson's Balm of Oils which was known all over Maine....), Samuel (married Mary Merrill of the New Gloucester Shaker settlement.), William (my great grandfather), Mary, and David (died when 4 or 5). William was our own grandfather. He married Mary Jones "out of Meeting." In other words she was a Quaker & he wasn't. I think he was born in 1812, married in 1845 & died in March 1896. He and Samuel lived together in the house which I suppose they built across the road from their father's house in Webster. Here they built carriages, later selling out to Potter (Octavius) & Thompson which later became Wade & Dunton. At times they hired several men to help in the carriage shop & ran the farm at the same time. I have heard the folks say that it was nothing unusual for the men to work in the carriage shop until midnight, while the women, our grandmother & Hattie's mother did tailoring sent to them from Boston, by candlelight. During the day they milked from 8 to 14 cows, made butter & cheese, wove & spun & prepared meals for the men in the carriage shop. Was it any wonder that Papa (Almon Robinson) was a 7 mo. premature & that they didn't expect to be able to raise him? They lived here until Aunt Ella (Almon's sister) was two years old when our Grandfather William moved to the place by the river. I suspect that one house was too small for two women and four children but there was no serious trouble. After they moved to the river they attended strictly to farming, making cheeses etc. They lived here until Aunt E. was 22, when after much deliberation they moved up to the farm (no doubt the farm on the Webster road outside Lewiston ME). It was about this time I believe that Papa...started on his travels. I don't know as much as I wish I did about this period in his life but know he got as far as Chicago & spent a great deal of time in the steel regions intending to make a life work of steel & that he came home on account of his father's ill health. At any rate he was there on the farm when Mother came there to board.... The boarder was Alice Janet Linney from Fall River MA who had come (as a teenager, I think) to teach grades 1 - 8 in the local school. Almon and Alice married in 1896. My cousin Edith remembers the story of the day one of the big boys was acting up, and Alice, unaware that he had a wooden leg, gave him a good shaking. He had prepared for this by loosening the strap and his leg fell to the floor. (Sounds like one of those apocryphal stories but I'll take it as true.) JONES Sometime just before the Revolution Joseph Field married Eunice Hill. She was the owner of the little silver spoon I sent Peter. Joseph fought more or less in the Revolution. He can be traced through Revolutionary records. When he came home from the war he brought his baby daughter (Mary Field) two tiny gold earrings. When she grew up she was married twice, I think, the first time to a Meader, our great, great grandfather & the second time to a Purrington, the ancestor of the New York lawyer who used to write to Papa. Also it is thru this second marriage that the Hodgkin relationship comes in. By her first husband she had a daughter Hannah who married Levi Jones. Their daughter was our grandmother Mary who married William Robinson. Hannah Meader had at least one brother & I think more but I am not sure. Ed Meader who used to be a dentist in Lisbon was a grandson of Hannah's brother also Tobias who lived over on the River Road & Amos who lived on Oak St. Ed was a very good friend of Papa; he had one son Guy who is an undertaker in Rumford, very well spoken of. I don't think Tobias married. Amos had one son Albert & a daughter Aletha. They are both dead. Hannah had Mary, Martha & Meader. Martha died when she was very young. She was engaged to marry Octavius Potter & went to Lewiston to work in the mill to earn money for her wedding things. Tuberculosis which had probably been dormant for some time became active & she came home & died in the early spring after Aunt Ella was born. As soon as grandmother was strong enough after Aunt Ella was born she went home to care for Martha taking Aunt Ella with her & all that winter & spring until Aunt Martha died she lay right on the bed beside her in a tightly closed room. And still she lived to be 83! I imagine she had to live down all those germs because when she was 8 to 12 she said she was considered "pindling" & was never made to do any work & encouraged to play outside all the time.. Meader whose full name was Levi Meader I think was Cora's father. He married Janet Maxwell & they had Cora, Elsie & Everett. Elsie died when she was 14 of typhoid fever & Everett died years after of the same disease. Levi Meader had died long before this from head injuries caused by an ugly cow. Cora married Herbert Denham & they never had any children. Everett married Lovina Denham & they had Everett, Louise, Huldah & Herbert Jr. This is about all I know about this branch of the family. Great grandmother Hannah lived in the old house on the back road behind the Scribner School at the top of the hill. It burned a few years ago. Papa used to like to go up there to visit his grandmother when he was a small boy. Great grandfather Levi was an elder in the Friend's church & the meetings were held somewhere down the hill towards Lewiston. He drove very fast spirited horses & was in the habit of driving full tilt down the rocky hill on his way to church. I still have his wedding hat & great grandmother's Quaker wedding bonnet. I also have the bible which he gave grandmother Mary when she was married.Friends' Records at Harlem (China), ME Tobias Jones of Harlem, son of Edward Jones of Brunswick and Mary his wife, deceased, and Hannah Dow, daughter of John Dow of Harlem and Zilpah his wife, 1 mo, 1 1818 in Harlem 1850 Federal census Brooks, Waldo, ME 17th Aug 1850 Tobias Jones age 55 farmer born me Hannah D.
