John Clough of Salisbury, MA vol 1
David7 (Wiliam6, Zacheus5, Ichabod4, Benoni3, John2 , John1) born 20 June 1795 at Lee, NH. when a samll child, David went with his parents to Danville, Canada where he lived his boyhood under primitive conditions. The Enw England patriotism of his family brought David to New Hampshire to enlist in the War of 1812 and he served two years in the army of the U.S. He returned to Canada and married Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Moses and Lucy Hall in January, 1824. Several years before his father returned to Durham, NH, David with his wife and four children moved to Durham in 1831 where he worked at his trade of ship carpenter at Durham Wharf and developed skills that were his most valuable asset throught his life. Meanwhile David was reading about the discoveries of the antiquities of the western hemisphere and became interested in Mormonism about 1830 which was then causing considerable excitement in New England. In 1831 the family left Durham for Ohio, locating about three miles from Kirtland. while traveling throught New York, he met Martin Harris, on a canal boat, who claimed to have been one of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon that Prophet Joseph Smith claimed to have found. David was a ready convert, for the Book of Mormon contained the history of ancient inhabitants of the American Continet with which David was already familiar. At Kirtland, the Latter Day Saints were gathering. There David worked to erect the first Mormon temple. After giving the year of 1837 to a mission in Canada and the East, David decided to move his family to Jackson County, Missouri, but at Springfield, Illinois the family became so ill that travel was prevented, a fortunated situation, because persecution and final expulsion of the Saints from Missouri was accomplished during this delay in Illinois. Next the Saints settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, built a majestic temple and the beginnings of a city, with roads to their surrounding farms, and commerce down the Mississippi River for lumber was established. The people of Illinois refused to permit the Mormons to become permanent citizens of their state and in 1844 the final act of persecution was mob that killed Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, and drove the Saints from Illinois. The Cluff Family crossed the Mississippi River in inclement weather, and traveled to Mount Pisgah in central Iowa where again homes were built and farms worked on the prairies. then, in 1850 a supply of provisions for a year, carpenter tools, bedding, clothing, wagons and oxen and cattle were assembled for the long, tedious journey to the Rocky Mountains. The story of the attacks by Indians, thirst, hunger and many other hardships has been preserved in "The Cluff Family Journal," a compilation of articles, biographies and incidents that is a book worth reading by members of the Society, (ICH: John Clough Society). Within the pages is a tribute to Elizabeth Hall Cluff, called "Mother Cluff," that proves her a saint among women. she had twelve children, all whom lived to marry in Utah. Her husband left her frequently, to fulfill missions for the Mormon church, often without sufficient supplies which she and the sons must provide. She withstood illnesses, covered wagon travel, Indians, rattlesnakes, and winter cold. Her reluctance toward the religious ideas that her husband had accepted was changed after many years in the West. IN 1848, the family arrived in Provo, Utah, as afterward named, and stayed that winter in the "log fort," a stockade erected for protection from Indians. In the spring of '49, it is claimed that "Father Cluff" was the first man to move out upon a farm, dangerous living because "Old Chief Walker and his band were the dread of this whole intermountain country." A cabinet shop was built of adobe in Provo City and later a residence was erected on the site and was said to have been furnished with beautiful pieces that were constructed by David, the cabinet maker. Another move was to come, however, when the Mormon church decided to establish a settlement in Arizona and David wished to go, probably as his children revealed afterward, because he wished to explore for prehistoric sites where he believed them to be from his studies in the Book of Mormon. His research resulted in finding the ruins of an ancient temple. After living for a time at Show Low Creek (ICH: Show Low, AZ) in a log house with his gristmill near-by, it was decided that the aged couple should join their sons in the Gila River valley. Their Mother Cluff died on the 5th day of June, 1881 and Father Cluff followed her on Dec 6th of the same year. From the descendants of his pioneer couple came Walter Cluff, the founder of the John Clough Genealogy Society, and hundreds of men and women who fill positions of honor in Utah and the western part of this country.
Mormon Pioneer Conversion Stories of my Ancestors by Mrs. Katherine (Haws) Garrard
David Cluff, son of William Cluff, married Betsey or Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Moses and Lucy Hall. In 1830 in New Hampshire David became interested in Mormonism which had caused great excitement in the Eastern states. Harvey Harris Cluff, one of David's sons, wrote this of David. . . "As father had become deeply interested in accounts published by explorers of antiquites showing that a civilized people once inhabited America, he naturally became imbued with the hope that the new record, would give his the information that he was seeking after. Father was led to go to Kirtland Ohio where the Prophet was and see and talk with him. He seemed to have a great desire to hear from the Prophets direct a statement of the wonderful visions, and condecensions of heavenly beings. During his journey from New Hampshire he chanced to meet Martin Harris, a convert to the new faith on a canal boat from whom he gained much information which only intensified his anxiety to see the Prophet."1 (Mr. Harris was on his first mission for the Church at the time). David was soon baptized and set out to meet the Prophet Joseph Smith in Kirtland. Here he heard the divine story of Heavenly messengers from the Prophets own lips.2 The David Cluff family then moved to Kirtland where David helped build the Kirtland temple, soon after which the persecution grew strong. Of Joseph Smith's martyrdom, Harvey Harris Cluff wrote. . . "The Prophet and Patriarch were martyred and the Saints driven across the Mississippi River into the wilderness of the territory of Iowa. The martyrdom of these men of God cast a gloom over the people. . . . No cyclon or dark cloud of persecution inflicted upon the Saints in the past seemed so black and fatal. Forced into the wilderness among savages, was supposed by the enemy, to prove the final destruction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From the camp of the exiles looking back across the great Mississippi River Nauvoo seemed a spector city suspended in the sky; with its temple towering above all else. We may feebly imagine the sadness of those who had been endowed within the walls of that sacred edifice, when they gazed from Montrose back to that spot, from where they had been ruthlessly driven.3 The Cluff family started out for Jackson County, Missouri with the other Saints but due to chills and fevers the Cluffs stayed in Springfield, Ill. which allowed them to escape much of the Missouri persecution. Harvey N. Cluff (David's son) then a boy said that the afflictions of chills and fever were much better than the persecutions they under went in Kirtland. Thus we can see what great trials the Cluff family went through because of their religious beliefs.

He was noted for his ambition and powers of endurance. At various times he worked in the fields, helped build, worked in a blacksmith shop, and as an engineer in a sawmill. After his family left Nauvoo , he worked in Nauvoo for a time and was there when the temple was burned. He and his two brothers, David and Joseph , preceded the family to the Salt Lake Valley . They each drove an ox team for Seth Blair. When their parents settled in Provo , they went with them. Moses was called on a mission to Prussia in 1852 , but upon arriving in England , his plans were changed and he labored in the Hull Conference in England . He didn't return until 1856 . After his return home and subsequent marriage, he and his brothers built a two story building, which was called the Home Dramatic Company. The building was used for dramatic and musical entertainment. Moses was the comedian. He moved his family to Arizona and settled in the Gila Valley . He worked hard and provided a good living for his family. He was working in the fields when he was stricken. He lived only a few more days. There was one family of Moses Cluff's that stayed with us until sometime in July when Moses had to move his family over to ShowLow (AZ) where his other wife lived. He had sisters for wives with their mother, for she was very sick. She did not live but a few weeks after they moved her over there.(Note from Peter McDonald-3 May 2002-This Moses Cluff had two wives listed that are sisters, the first is Eliza Langman Cluff and the second wife is Rebbeca Culey Cula Langman Cluff. Their mother who is mentioned here as being sick and dying is Rebecca Woodward Scoular Langman and interestingly, she was once married to a Moses "M" Cluff but not this Moses Cluff who is married to her daughters. Moses "M" Cluff was born about 1801 in England. The Moses Cluff that Rebecca Woodward Scoular Langman's daughter's are married to here in this part of this account was born in 1828 in New Hampshire.) Bro. Cluff moved away from there to the Gile (Gila, pronounced hela)

Ash Creek Canyon has a rich history, is home to a 200 ft waterfall and is crucial for endangered Mount Graham red squirrels. Cluff Family, which established a ranch in 1880 at the bottom of the canyon, six miles south of Pima. The ranch tapped the creek to irrigate grains, alfalfa and fruit trees, according to Forest Service historical documents. It took Moses Cluff's six sons seven years to build a 12-mile road up the mountain just west of Ash Creek so they could establish a lumber mill. Along the way, they lost several horses to falls off steep cliffs. In the 1910s, wood was sent downhill from the mill using a flume, according to the Graham County Historical Society. Cluff Ranch, was at the foot of the Pinaleno Mountains. There is a 788-acre Cluff Ranch State Wildlife Preserve, a popular local fishing hole fed by a 3-mile pipe that taps the lower reaches of Ash Creek Canyon.

Latter- day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia vol 1 Biographies
Cluff, William Wallace, president of the Summit Stake of Zion from 1877 to 1901, is the fourth son of David Cluff and Betsey Hall, and was born March 8, 1832, in Willoughby, Lake county, Ohio. His father joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833, and moved to Kirtland Ohio, in 1834, where he worked on the first Temple built by the Latter-day Saints. The family left Kirtland for Missouri in 1837, but were compelled to remain at Springfield, Ill., on account of sickness. In 1840, as soon as the Saints commenced to gather at Nauvoo, after the expulsion from Missouri, the family moved thither from Springfield, and here William's father worked on the Temple until it was finished. William was baptized in the Mississippi river by Elder Peter Shurtz in 1842. He well remembers the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, the Patriarch. All the trying and exciting scenes attending their martyrdom, and the expulsion of the Saints from the beautiful Temple and city of Nauvoo, are still vivid in his mind; especially will he never forget the occasion when the lifeless bodies of the beloved Prophet and Patriarch were brought back from Carthage jail, where these great and good men had been murdered in cold blood. William's parents went with the main body of the Church when the Saints left Nauvoo for the wilderness, in the great "unknown West!" On their journey west the Cluff family halted temporarily at Mount Pisgah and at Council Bluffs, in Iowa, remaining two years at each place. In 1850 they crossed the Plains, arriving in Great Salt Lake valley in October; the family settled in Provo. William served as a cavalry-man in the Indian war (known as the Walker war) in 1853. In 1854, he was called on a four years' mission to the Sandwich Islands, where he passed through a varied experience, learning the language, manners of living etc. of that strange people. In 1860 he was called to take a mission to Scandinavia. After learning the Danish language, he spent over three years traveling through Denmark, Norway and Sweden under the presidency of Elder Jesse N. Smith. In October, 1863, he married Miss Ann Whipple who has borne him five sons and three daughters.

Harvey Harris Cluff
On the 16th of May, 1889, he was appointed by the First Presidency one of a committee of three to select a suitable place in which to colonize the Hawaiian Saints, such as had already come or might yet come to Utah. His associates were his brother William W. Cluff and F. A. Mitchell. The committee reported on a number of localities, and finally a place in Skull Valley, Tooele County, was chosen. Harvey Cluff was appointed to take charge of the Hawaiians and colonize them there. The date of his appointment was August 21, 1889, and on the 28th of that month he arrived with the colony at "Josepa." A year later, while the First Presidency were attending the anniversary celebration, he was released, and Elder William King appointed to succeed him. He returned to Provo, resuming his duties as one of the presidency of Utah Stake. During 1891 he superintended the erection of the new Brigham Young Academy building. With that institution he had long been connected as one of its board of directors.
Hubert Howe Bancrofts's History of Utah 1540-1886
Among the presidents of the Utah stake of Zion may be mentioned Harvey Harris Cluff, a native of Kirtland, whose ancestors settled at Durham, N. H., a few years after the arrival of the Mayflower, and whose father, David Cluff, served in the American army during the war of 1812. Removing from Durham to Ohio in 1830, David and his family joined the Mormon faith, and proceeding thence to Nauvoo, shared in all the hardships of the exodus, arriving in the autumn of 1850 in the valley of Great Salt Lake, where they cast in their lot at Provo. On the 6th of October, 1856, when Brigham Young announced before a general conference of the church the threatened disaster to the hand-cart emigrants, Harvey Cluff, then only in his twentieth year, was one of the first who volunteered to go to their aid. On this occasion he states that the provisions and clothing furnished before nightfall were more than sufficent to lead 22 teams. In 1859 Mr Cluff was elected city councillor, and in 1875, after his missionary labors, principally in Europe and the Sandwich Islands, was ordained bishop, and assigned two years later to the charge of the fourth ward of Provo City. Utah Since State: Historical and Biographical. Volume II.
Leonard B. Cluff, one of the partners in the Arrowhead Motor Company of Provo, is a native son of the city in which he makes his home, his birth having here occurred July 31, 1887. His parents were Jerry and Lydia (Snow) Cluff, both natives of Utah, the former born in Provo and the latter in Manti and both representatives of old families of this state. The paternal grandfather was Moses Cluff, one of the pioneer residents of Provo. Jerry Cluff was reared and educated in Provo and throughout his active business life engaged in plastering but is now living retired. He has been an earnest worker in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The mother is a daughter of George and Eunice Snow, representatives of one of the old and well known families of this state. The grandmother came across the plains with a company commanded by Captain Kimball. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Cluff are parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters, eight of whom are yet living.
