Ames Zimmerman family found in the Tonawanda-Kenmore Historical Society Newsletter Feb 2003 The Herbert Zimmerman Home: At this writing, the old Queen Anne style house at 2808 Delaware Avenue between Tremaine and LaSalle is being demolished. It was built circa 1900 for former Town Supervisor James B. Zimmerman, who decided to move from the rural area of the town into the soon-to-be Village of Kenmore to demonstrate his commitment to the new suburban community. He died before the house was completed, and the house was occupied for many years by his son, Herbert A. Zimmerman, an attorney who for some time represented the community in the New York State Assembly. After about a half-century as primarily a residence, the building was significantly altered &endash; or defaced &endash; with a light brick storefront covering the original porch and first floor bay, with the interior divided into multiple apartments. Over the years the storefront housed various businesses (most of us who lived in the village probably best remember Tremaine Shoe Repair ). In its last years, the building had deteriorated and barely resembled its original condition, inside or outside. The house will be replaced by expanded facilities of the Kane-Doyle Jeep dealership. Messers Kane and Doyle generously permitted us to salvage some interesting and attractive stained glass windows and fireplace fronts, which have been added to our collections. info below on Zimmerman family from Early Settlers of NY State Vol II on the Zimmerman family page 667 James B. Zimmerman was decidedly in favor of public improvements. He was Highway Commissioner of the Town of Tonawanda, when Delaware Road was changed from a mere mud highway to a substantial stone road. Delaware Road, as laid from the city line of Buffalo to Young Street in Tonawanda, was paved with brick 60 feet wide, as result of his decision for good roads. The Zimmerman family - written and read by Herbert A. Zimmerman at the reunion of the Zimmerman family page 649 A history of the Zimmerman family would probably be a history of Erie County, but w will confine ourselves to facts and legends since the time of the founding of our branch of this family by Levi Zimmerman and Elizabeth Gray, who were married July 5th, 1832, about which we will find plenty of sentiment and food for sympathetic thought from that eventful day. The Holland Land Company conveyed the tract of land in Great Lot 34, Township 12, Range 8, to Conrad Zimmerman, father of Levi, Oct. 8, 1828. conrad conveyed this property to Levi, his son, August 30, 1847. This is the plot upon which w are this day reuniting in memory of our forebears. Legend has it that our grandparents and their little daughter, Kathrine, who was born July 10, 1833, traveled from the beautiful Mohawk Valley by ox cart to the spot upon wh8ich they were planning to erect their home, in the neighborhood of those relatives, Adam Zimmerman, Peter Zimmerman, William Zimmerman and Catherline Zimmerman the wife of Richard Failing. Articles from TULLY, N.Y., TIMES' issue of May 4, 1907 Town of Tully Submitted by Mike Winner Postmaster General Meyer has approved the detailed adjustment of salaries of rural free delivery carriers and the new schedule, which will become effective July 1 next, will make a graded increase in the compensation of carriers of from 9 to 25 per cent., based upon the number of miles traversed by the carriers as shown by the records of the department. The readjustment adopted with the increase upward of $6,000,000 made in the appropriation by Congress will involve an aggregate expenditure for rural service during the next fiscal year of nearly $35,000,000. The schedule follows: Routes of 24 or more miles, $900 per annum; 22 to 24 miles, $864; 20 to 22 miles, $810; 18 to 20 miles, $720; 16 to 18 miles, $630; 14 to 16 miles, $540; 12 to 14 miles, $504; 10 to 12 miles, $468; 8 to 10 miles, $432; 6 to 8 miles, $396. The change advances R.F.D. carriers, Eugene Zimmerman and Elmer June, of the Tully office, to $864 a year each. Articles from TULLY, N.Y., TIMES' issue of June 1, 1907 Town of Tully Submitted by Mike Winner Mrs. E.L. Zimmerman entertained the whist club last Monday evening and on the strength of the count, showing that Mrs. M.L. Towner had won the first honor, that lady invited the club to partake of ice cream soda, which invitation, so generously given by Mrs. Towner, was unanimously accepted, there not being a dissenting vote. As Mrs. Henry Crofoot carried off the consolation, she was not expected to "follow suit" so the club had to be satisfied with one treat. Mrs. Towner found later that she had been a little early in extending her hospitality which, by the way is a characteristic of her, and that a recount showed Miss Mary Naughton of LaFayette, who played as a substitute for Mrs. J.C. Reagan, as the winner. The ladies are simply wondering what Mrs. Towner is going to do about it as they already have the ice cream soda. It looks as if she would have to join Mrs. Crofoot and they two enter into a "consolation" partnership. Some of the men are mean enough to insinuate that some of the members should learn to count before learning to play whist. The next meeting will be on Monday evening with Miss Katherine Lillis on Lincoln avenue. Articles from TULLY, N.Y., TIMES' issue of May 25, 1907 Town of Tully Submitted by Mike Winner The whist club met last week Saturday with Mrs. Clarence Fellows. The honor was given to Mrs. M.L. Towner. Mrs. W.L. Earle received the consolation prize. The club met Thursday evening of this week with Mrs. H.C. Crofoot. Mrs. J.T. Crofoot won the honor and Mrs. William Pierce, the consolation.
