Notes for John Whiting:

John Whiting appears to have been the first Whiting to settle in Tamworth. The earliest known record of him being in Tamworth is the 1830 Federal Census, in which his household is listed as follows:

• 3 males under age 5 (George, John, and Levi)
• 1 male age 5-10 (Jeremiah)
• 1 male age 10-15 (this person is unknown)
• 1 male age 20-30 (presumably, this is John, and is in the wrong age category--his age should have been about 33 for this census)
• 1 female age 30-40 (John's wife, Martha)

The Whitings moved to Tamworth from the Limerick, Maine area, probably in late 1829 or early 1830. Vital statistics for marriage and birthdates indicate the Whitings were living in Limerick as late as May of 1829, when Levi F. Whiting was born. Earlier census records do not record any Whitings in the Limerick area of York County, Maine. There is strong evidence that John's father, Caleb Whiting, was living in or around Boston about the year 1820, so it's likely that John was living there as well. Vital records indicate John's birth place was Limerick, Maine and that he married there. His whereabouts between those two events are unknown.
