HEGARTY, LYDIA
Death of An Estimable Lady
We have just received the sad news of the death of
Mrs. Lydia Hegarty, which occurred at Keystone Dakota, Sept. 20. Mrs.
Hegarty was born in County Derry, Ireland, and with her widowed mother
and her brothers and sisters came to this country when she was quite
young. The family record was lost while on the voyage across the ocean,
yet from other sources we learn that she was about 78 years of age at
the time of her death. She with her family located in Clearfield county,
and was married to Mr. Samuel Hegarty, who was an influential and
respected citizen of Guelich township, and an elder in Cross Roads
church. Mr. Hegarty died several years ago, since which, Mrs. Hegarty
has spent part of the time with Mr. Matthew McCully of Osceola, the only
brother that survives her. On the 29th of July she left this place to
make a visit to the family of Mrs. Sarah Hegarty in Dakota. She was
unwell at the time, and the trip with the change of climate and the
weight of years were too much for her. Everybody has learned to call her
"Aunt Lydia," because of her long and useful life. Settling as
she and her husband did in this county at such an early day, they had
many difficulties to meet and privations to undergo, but by industry and
economy they overcame them, and acquired a large fortune. She was
generous and liberal in supporting every good cause in helping those who
were in need. We know but little of the particulars of her last sickness
and death, but she was a woman of mature Christian experience, who could
say with Paul that she had a desire to depart and be with Christ, which
is far better. With God’s peace in her heart and immortal hope beaming
in her eyes, she calmly passed from toil and trial into that rest that
remaineth for the people of God. Her many friends in this community will
be pained at hearing of her death, and regret that they were not again
permitted to see her face in the flesh. Her remains were interred in the
cemetery at Keystone Dakota where they rest in the hope of a glorious
resurrection.
NOTE: Though Lydia is not buried in this cemetery,
her husband is and I wanted to keep the obits together.

HEGARTY, SAMUEL
The Funeral
Never have we seen such an immense throng of people
in a country place as were at the X Roads farm on Thursday of last week.
There were between five and six hundred persons there to pay their last
respects to a departed neighbor and friend. The funeral service was
conducted by Rev. Wm. Gemmel, of Attlewood, Pa., (a former pastor of the
deceased), and the pastor of the Ramey Presbyterian church. The remains
were encased in a beautiful casket in the main hall of the spacious
mansion, and when the opportunity was given to take leave, there was an
expression of eagerness on the part of the friends and neighbors to take
the last look upon the face of the one at rest, soon to be consigned to
the grave, in the little churchyard that surrounds the old X Roads
church. The floral offerings were very pretty. A pillow by the sons of
the deceased with the "Father" thereon, a Masonic emblem, by
Coalport Lodge, No. 574, F&AM, and cut flowers in abundance by other
friends, was another evidence of the high esteem in which he was held.
The pall bearers were: Messrs. James McKeehen, R. A. Holden, Geo. D.
Benn, John Byer, Geo. McCully and Wm. Mullen. (Coalport Standard April
11, 1895)
NOTE: This article for Samuel Hegarty started with
the biographical sketch of his father, which is enclosed under
"Information on families." I did not type it again for Samuel’s
obit.)

April 1, 1895 at home, three miles from Coalport, at age 63. He was a

survived by wife and three children. Interment will be at the old
homestead. (Altoona Mirror, April 3, 1895)

HENSAL, DAVID
David Hensal Found Dead In The Woods
Well Known Resident of Madera Overcome by the Heat
David C. Hensal, one of the best known citizens of
Clearfield county, was found dead in the woods about a mile from his
home at Madera. On Saturday, July 11, Mr. Hensal left his home in
Madera to walk to the farm of his son, Sherman, a short distance from
town. It was a warm day, and presumably to escape the rays of the
sun, he took a by path through some woodland. Not returning in the
evening, as he had promised, inquiry was made and it was found he had
not reached his son's home. Fears were entertained at once, that
something serious had happened to him, and an investigation as to his
whereabouts was started. The whole community became aroused and
searching parties were sent out in every direction, but without finding
any trace of the missing man. Thursday afternoon about 2 o'clock
while looking for his cattle, a farmer found the dead body of Mr. Hensal
on a little green patch under a big tree. The body showed such
signs of decomposition as to indicate that he had died on
Saturday. Not being very well for some time past it is presumed he
was overcome by heat and sat down under the tree and expired. It
was found necessary to bury the body Thursday evening, interment taking
place at Hegarty's X-Roads, and many person for miles around attended
the funeral. The deceased was born in Cashtown, Adams county, and
was aged 82 years on the 20th of March last. His parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Hensal, were among the early settlers of Adams county,
He came to Clearfield county at the age of about 20 years, settling near
Madera, first following carpentering. Later he engaged in the
lumbering and coal business having interests in Clearfield and Somerset
counties. He is survived by five sons and two daughters, viz:
George, of Pembina, North Dakota; Dr. Thomas, of Nowata, Oklahoma; John,
Amos and Sherman, of Madera; Blanche, wife of Dr. Thomas Boyer, of
Pittsburgh, and Cora, wife of J. O. Stanley of Philipsburg. Two
brothers and one sister, residing in the west, also survive. (The
Progress July 18, 1914)

Comp, of the Methodist Episcopal church after which the remains were

deceased, of Huntingdon county, Pa. and was born in that county on March
27, 1831. On March 30, 1848, she was united in marriage to John Hersh.
In April of the same year they came to Clearfield county and resided on

destroyed by fire in 1899, after which she moved to Madera. Later she

Ames, until death came. Mrs. Hersh was a kindly neighbor, a loving
mother and a splendid Christian woman. For more than sixty years she was
a faithful and consistent member of the Ladies Aid society, and was
always ready to work or purse to pay in the cause of the church and the
society. She was loved by all who knew her, which was showed by
magnificent floral tributes presented and the host of friends and

HOLLINGSWORTH, WILLIAM
Mr. William Hollingsworth died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Callie
Spencer in Paint township, Feb. 17, 1903, aged 82 years and 6 months.
The deceased had a severe attack of pneumonia in November and December
of last year, and his death was hourly expected, but contrary to
expectation he recovered sufficiently to be able to go about the house
and to go outside upon nice days. A severe cold or an attack of
"grippe" again confined him to the house and he sank rapidly,
dying triumphantly on Feb. 17. He had been a life-long member of the
Methodist Episcopal church; was a class leader and exhorter for many
years. He was a whole-hearted Christian, earnestly working for the
success of his church and the Master's cause. His place in the work must
long remain vacant. Funeral services were held at the home of his
daughter Wednesday evening, Feb. 18, at 8 o'clock, services in charge of
his pastor, Rev. W. C. Wallace of Lumber City. The next day the remains
were taken to Glen Hope where services were held in the Methodist
Episcopal Church by Revs. John Vrooman of Glen Hope and W. C. Wallace.
After the services the interment was made at Hegarty's Cross Roads
burying ground.
