BOWMAN, JAMES J.
J. J. Bowman Dead
Oldest Resident of This Part of Clearfield County Dies
at the Age of 91 Years.
James J. Bowman, the oldest citizen of Geulich
township, died at his home at Alemansville on Monday, Nov. 23rd. He had
been sick all through the summer but for the last few weeks seemed to be
getting better and was able to go about again until Sunday evening, when
he became suddenly ill and died the following day. He was over 91 years
of age and was born in Mifflin county. In his boyhood and early manhood
he worked on the canal. His boating experience and canal stories were
interesting and he enjoyed telling them. After the rail road took the
traffic of the canal he located near where Bellwood now is and learned
the blacksmith trade. He was married to Eliza Jane Hagerty of that
neighborhood about 52 years ago. He settled in the village of Allemans.
His wife dying, he was married the second time to Mrs. Sarah Spangle.
Mr. Bowman was a peaceful and inoffensive citizen; a member of the
Dunkard church; and a great Bible student. Fro years he was a faithful
Bible class teacher in the Sunday School. He leaves three sons – John,
of Ginter; Samuel, of Clearfield and Lewis of Johnstown, and one
daughter, Mr. E. J. Morris; twenty grandchildren and nineteen
great-grand children. Services were held in the U. B. church of this
place on Thursday, Nov. 25th, and interment was made in the Cambria
Mills Cemetery
BOWMAN, SARAH J.
After a long painful illness Mrs. Sarah J. Bowman,
wife of J. J. Bowman died on Saturday night April 7, aged 66 years.
Another of our kindest and best of friends and neighbors has forever
left the little village of Allemans, which has been her home for over 40
years, and for most of that time she has been a faithful worker in the
Sunday School. For years she had charge of the infant class, and many of
her scholars are men and women now, far from the home of their
childhood, yet others filled their places. She was generous and kind
almost to a fault, always think and planning for the comfort and
happiness of others. Mrs. Bowman was the mother of nine children, three
of whom are living, viz: John Spangle and Mrs. Charles McMonigal , of
Portage; children of her first marriage; and Lewis Bowman, of Sonman,
all of whom were with her the week preceding her death. All that loving
hands could do and medical skill could aid was done, but of no avail.
She was a faithful member of the United Brethren church, This charge
being without a pastor, Rev. Ibach of the Lutheran church kindly took
charge of the service. His sermon was most appropriate and fitting for
the occasion Mrs. Bowman’s maiden name was Richard. She was born at
what was then called the Richard and Bell Improvement in Reade township
where the town of Lloydsville is now located. Her journey is over,
portion of her life was rough and thorny, but her happy disposition
never failed her and now cometh rest and everlasting peace.

BYERS, SARAH MABEL
Sarah Mabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Byers
died Aug 27th 1905, at her home near Utahville, aged 11 years and 28
days. Little Mabel had always been an invalid and was therefore deprived
of the pleasures of other children. Although requiring constant
attention and great care, this was cheerfully and lovingly given by one
of the kindest and most loving of mothers. No sacrifice was too great.
Mabel was always first to be considered and cared for. The other little
ones have received due care but Mabel must never be neglected. This was
the law of the household. And during the last illness which ran from
days into weeks into months, that devotion was increasing until the
mother lay prostrated herself on a bed of serious sickness. William
Byers will never loose the respect and esteem of his neighbors for the
spirit he showed in this trying hour, taking charge of the little
sufferer himself he supplied the tender care that the mother was
compelled to resign until death released her from her suffering. While
other friends and relatives did splendid service in assisting the
family, Mrs. James Glasgow, sister to Mrs. Byers was unceasing in her
sisterly office leaving her own cares to others of her household and
devoting herself almost entirely to the care of little Mabel until the
seriousness of her sisters sickness compelled her to devote the
attention to her. The funeral services of Mabel Byers were conducted at
her home by Rev. Ake with interment at Cambria Mills. Before leaving the
house the little casket was taken upstairs to the bed of the mother for
a last farewell to the child she had unceasing loved and cared for so
many years. The large concourse of friends who gathered at the funeral
and despite the rain followed to the cemetery showing the feeling
entertained for Mr. and Mrs. Byers by their neighbors. Funeral Director
J. M. Beers had charge. Mr. and Mrs. Byers wish through the STANDARD to
sincerely thank friends and neighbors for their kindness and assistance
during the trying ordeal through which they have passed.
