Flinton RD Boy, 7, Drowns Saturday in Strip Mine Hole
Kenneth L. Baum is Victim of Tragedy
A seven-year-old Flinton RD boy, Kenneth L. Baum, lost
his life in a tragic accident Saturday in White Twp. The boy, a son of
Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Baum, drowned in a water-filled strip mine test
hole located about 500 to 600 feet from his home. According to Deputy
Coroner R.P. Wilkinson, Kenneth was fishing along the test hole when he
lost his footing and tumbled into the water. It was estimated that the
depth of the water is nine feet. The test hole itself measured about 12
by 30 feet. Kenneth and his brother, Jackie, five years old, were
fishing Saturday along the banks of the hole. According to Jackie, his
older brother was trying to catch lizards near the edge of the hole when
he suddenly toppled into the water. Mr. and Mrs. Baum told the deputy
coroner that Jackie came running into the house screaming that Kenneth
had fallen into the hole. The family and several neighbors went to the
scene and began an attempt to locate Kenneth’s body. A neighbor, Frank
Beers, upon whose property the hole is located, fished the body from the
water with a pole about a half-hour after the accident. Volunteer
fireman from Patton and Coalport were called to the scene and worked for
over an hour in an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve the drowned boy. He
was pronounced dead about 2:00 p.m. (DST) by Dr. B. G. Learn, a
Blandburg physician. Coroner Wilkinson listed the death as resulting
from accidental drowning, and he also ordered the test hole fenced in or
filled in as a precaution against a recurrence of such a tragedy.
Similar holes have been responsible for several drownings in the area
during the past several years. Pvt. Thomas Hudock of Ebensburg detail of
state police also assisted in the investigation. Kenneth is survived by
his parents and these brothers and sister: Clair, George, Carl, Mary and
John.

I was once a happy father,
A proud husband with a child,
And a wife’s fond devotion
They were all the world to me.
Now my heart is sad a lonely,
For my loved one she has fled,
On the hillside she is sleeping
In the city of the dead.
Never thought I for one moment
That my dear young wife must go;
Just for six short years together
We had borne our joys and woe.
