A tridition related in the towns of Oxford (Derby), Hadda m and Killingworth, CT, by descendants of Richard, was tha t he was impressed in to the British Navy from the Isle o f Man, and that later after some years service on the Ameri can Coast, was put ashore at Savannah, Georgia , to die of Yellow Fever. But recovered and married his nu rse. With her he went to Charleston, South Carolina, and s tarted a grocery business. Later to escape a threatened bo mbardment by a Spanish man-o-war, he and others provisionin g a small vessel from his store, sailed for the North and l anded on the shore of CT., settling at Guilford in 1686.

Richards first wife died and he remarried Deborah all hi s children were from his first wife.
