Maidstone is literally a ‘stone of the maidens’, most likely indicating a place where they were known to gather. Its Anglo-Saxon form was Mægthan stan.

Information on Markets and Fairs held in Kent. People often met their future spouse at their local market and sometimes they also married there.
Maidstone
A cattle market is held on the second Saturday of the month, a corn and hop market every Thursday, a meat and poultry market on Thursdays and Saturdays and a daily market for fish and vegetables. There are four annual fairs held for horses, cattle and pedlery, one of which is also for hops.
The oldest known inhabitant of Maidstone was the Iguanadon, whose fossilised remains were found in a quarry in 1834. During the Middle Ages Maidstone was dominated by the Archbishops of Canterbury and life centered around the Palace. The town has a turbulent past and was the site of many well known rebellions including Wat Tyler's 'Peasants Revolution of 1381, the Kentish rebellion led by Jack Cade
In 1450 and the revolt against Queen Mary (Bloody Mary) in 1554, instigated by Sir Thomas Wyatt of nearby Allington Castle. The revolt failed and Wyatt lost his head!
Maidstone was also the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the English Civil War when General Lord Fairfax destroyed the Royalist forces and captured the town.
Through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries Maidstone prospered supplying London with market produce, hops, linen, paper, ragstone and gin. Today over 200 listed buildings remain in the town.
