Husband's General Notes

================================================================================

The Ferguson Homestead was burned in 1968 to make room for new construction.

It was a large house built the old-fashioned way with pegs and it could have

lasted many more years.  There was a fireplace in every room and there were

four on each of the two floors and an attic.  There was a second-story porch

that could be seen from the Mauricetown Road.

It was the custom in those years to build farm houses as near a navigable

stream as possible.  It was much easier to travel by water than through the

sandy roads in a wagon.  Each of the farms on that side of the river was built

closer to the river than to the road.  There were piers in the rear of the

houses to which boats were tied.  The farmers used the boats to go down and

across the river to Port Elizabeth, quite a thriving community in those days.

That is where they did their shopping.

There was a story told that a detachment of English soldiers from a vessel sent

up the river to find food, came ashore in that area during the War of 1812.

Another Story that has been circulated is about a company of Tories that

crossed the river not far from the Ferguson Farm during the war, and bivouacked

overnight on one of the farms on the west side of the river.
