John William Wheatley

John William Wheatley was born 16 March 1882 in a small community near Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas. His younger years were spent in Reagor Springs and then in the early 1900's moved with his family to the Pleasant Grove area near Winnsboro, Wood County, Texas.

John married Luna E. Walker 21 May 1908 in Quitman, Wood County, Texas. Luna was the daughter of Simpson Walker and Malinda Bozeman. John and Luna Wheatley lived in Hemphill County, Texas in 1910. He managed a drug store there.

John William was a self-employed druggist when he registered in the WWI Draft in Wilbarger County. John and Luna lived in Vernon, Wilbarger County when the 1930 census was enumerated. He was the proprietor of a drug store and she was a clerk in the family business.

bullet jpg 1.   Kathryne Wheatley was born 15 March 1908 in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. She married Edgar Lloyd Smith 15 February 1933 in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas (Vol: 10, P: 332). He was born 21 February 1906 in Mississippi.

Edgar Lloyd Smith died 24 March 1977 in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas. He is buried in Eastview Memorial Park in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas.

Kathryne Wheatley died 09 September 1982 in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas. Their is a lot and tombstone marker for Kathryne near Edgar Lloyd Smith in Eastview Memorial Park Cemetery but she was not buried there. Her body donated to Baylor College of Dentistry for medical research

Funeral rites for Pioneer Pharmacist of this City are held Monday - Succumbs in Hospital Sunday

   J. W. Wheatley, 60, retired Vernon druggist, died in a local hospital Sunday at 1:30 P.M. after a long illness. He had been critically ill for the last ten days but had been in poor health nine years.
   Funeral services were held at the residence, 2701 West Wilbarger Street, Monday at 3 P.M., with Rev. J. Albert Steele, minister of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. Internment was in East View Memorial Park under direction of the Underwood Funeral Home.
   Mr. Wheatley was born March 16, 1881, on a farm near Waxahachie and spent his boyhood in that vicinity. He moved to Winnsboro at the age of 19 and was married there to Miss Luna Walker, May 19, 1907. The couple moved to Canadian, Texas, the following year and Mr. Wheatley began his carrer as a druggist in that city.

 

Wheatley, 91, Dies

  Mrs. Luna E. Wheatley, 91, died late Tuesday in a local nursing home after a lenghty illness.

  Funeral services will be hald 10 a. m. Thursday in Sullivans Funeral Chapel with Dr. Rufus Sprayberry. pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Internment was in East View Memorial Park.

  Mrs. Wheatley was born as Luna Walker, 21 August 1887, at Quitman , a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Walker. She married John W. Wheatley in Quitman on May 21, 1908. She was a graduate of North Texas Womans's College at Denton. They moved to Vernon in 1915 from Canadian. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

  Suriving are a daughter, Kathryne Smith, of Vernon, one granddaughter and one grandson. Six great-grandchildren also survive. She ws preceded in death by her husband in 1941.(sic)

  Pallbearers will be Houston Belew, W. T. Belew, Jimmy Joe Williams, Wendell Mints, A. M. Hiatt and Jerry Brd.

   Five years later they moved to Merkel, stayed there one year, then located in Vernon, in 1914, where they have since resided. He first became associated with the B. & W. Drug Store on Main Street, assisting in the operation of that business for several years, then he purchased the Wilbarger Pharmacy and operated that place of business four years when falling health forced him to retire.
   Mr. Wheatley became a member of the Baptist Church when he was a young man and was a member of the Baptist Church here throughout the 28 years he made his home in Vernon.
   Surviving relatives include the widow and one daughter, Mrs. E. Lloyd Smith, and a granddaughter, Kay Elsie Smith, all of Vernon.
   Active Pall bearers were Russell (sic) son, Olin Turner, Bill McCaleb and Roy Abbott.
