Return to Homepage Although not confirmed, I am now quite certain that I am a descendant of Samuel Hannay and Martha Main `of Kirkmaiden Parish Wigtownshire. Early family `of Salpans Cottage Kirkmaiden Following traditional Scottish naming patterns, dates, and where this Samuel Hannay raised his family in Kirkmaiden Parish Wigtownshire, this is my earliest ancestor. Samuel was born abt 1720 `of Kirkmaiden Parish and married Martha 19th April 1743 in Kirkmaiden By Drummore. There are 13 recorded children of Samuel Hannay and Martha Main: - 1) John Hannay born 8 Feb 1774 Mill of Drummore, married Jannet Galloway 9 Feb 1769 Leigh Corgie, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire. By 1778 John Hannay and Jannet Galloway were recorded living in Old Luce Parish Wigtownshire. My earliest confirmed ancestor was Dr. Samuel Hannay born abt 1794, who was recorded as a Doctor of Medicine and a Surgeon, and raised his family in Old Luce (Glenluce) Parish of Wigtownshire. Information from The Wigtownshire Sasine Abridgements: A Sasine Abridgement: John Mean (Samuels Father in Law) gets Renunciation 31st July 1813 by Samuel Hannay in Claughrie of the Merkland of Barnaught, Kirkcowan." (Claughrie is in Kirkinner Parish, Wigtownshire, quite near the Parish of Wigtown on the Borrowmoss Estate, but on the way to Kirkcowan Parish); Barnaught is just north of Kirkcowan Parish. Merkland is quite a common land description, a wee bit after the fashon of the back forty here in North America, so many farms had a Merkland in the same way that many Estates had a Borland, or Boreland. It is assumed that Claughrie of the Merkland of Barnaught was a former smaller holding, maybe a cottar's place located in the Merkland area of the larger farm of Barnaught. According to Old Parish Records (OPR): Proclomations: Mr. Samuel Hannay & Helen Main 17 Apr 1814 Announcement published in the Dumfries and Galloway Courier 26th Apr 1814: - It is believed that Samuel Hannay's family quite possibly were also living in the area of Barnaught re. John Main's loan to Samuel, very possibly for his education as a Surgeon. - It is known that Samuel had completed his education and was recorded as a Surgeon by 1814 and at that time was living in Penninghame Parish. - It is also apparent that Samuel and Helen were also in a relationship at this time as young Miss Helen Main and Samuel's 1st child, was born 21st Sept 1814, 5 months after their marriage on 18 April 1814. Scottish Church "Full record of Marriage shows Samuel Hannay: Samuel and Helen were the parents of 9 children born from 1814 to 1837.
