A Brief Note on Posterization
Posterization is the representation of an image with a limited number of shades and/or color. In the image on the prior page, there are a limited number of gray shades where there should be a more continuous gradient of shades - this degrades the detail in the image. To demonstrate what posterization is, here is how I made the gray scale on the home page for checking the monitor settings. I first made the following continuous gray scale below:

This was done by making a gradient from pure black to pure white. I then used the Posterize command to represent this as 15 distinct shades, each representing about 7% of the total scale from black to white. This command provides the following distinct steps:
