Fountain Bishop is the brother of Sinclair Jefferson Bishop (my
great-grandfather)... Fountain W and Sinclair J were sons of Tyra D and Rebecca
(Wilburn) Bishop of Shamrock, Callaway County, Missouri... Tyra D Bishop had a brother
named Granville Addison Bishop... one of Granville's sons was Beverly Allen Bishop
(1852-1914) who married Eliza Jane Coil (1855-1945) on 27 April 1876...
Apparently in 1945 when she died Eliza Jane still had a brother, James B Coil,
and a sister, Mrs. Martha Coil, living in the East Shamrock area... also per Eliza
Jane's obituary "Mrs. Bishop, who was the daughter of Solomon and Permelia Renfro Coil,
was a member of Liberty Church for many years. She lived in the same community in which
she was born for her entire life." :-)... btw both Beverly Allen and Eliza Jane (Coil)
Bishop are buried in the Liberty Christian Church Cemetery just northwest of Shamrock...
along with Fountain W Bishop.. Tyra D and Rebecca (Wilburn) Bishop... and other
Bithops & related family... Granville Addison Bishop had his gravestone located
(recently) in the Bethel Cemetery right across the Callaway-Montgomery County line... a
mile plus north of Route B which is west of Montgomery City... where a number of Bishop
and related family are buried... Granville Addison Bishop was in fact killed by Union
soldiers 21 July 1861 on his farm off Route B west of Montgomery City...
Where is Solomon and Permilia Coil buried?... what is your relationship to
Solomon and Permilia Coil?... expressed another way I guess is... what is your
great-grandfather George Edward Coil's relationship to Solomon and Permilia Coil?...
guess these connections would make us all cousins of sorts... :-)...
can you give me a couple of paragraphs or so of your genealogy that
would relate your line and it's connection to Solomon and Permilia
Coil?... thanks...

Looks like you are a distant cousin then... :-)... do you by any chance have
more information on Solomon and Permilia Coil?... how many and who their children
were?... perhaps who they married?... Ed Coil seems to know where Solomon and Permilia
were buried... at least he has a photo of their gravestone... I think he is also
related to them but he hasn't gotten back yet with what the connection is between his
great-grandfather, George Edward Coil, and Solomon and Permilia... am waiting to get a
reply from him with additional information detail about his connection to Solomon and

Can you or Ed Coil build upon what I have put together so far?... or provide
any corrections?... Wanda did you and Ed know each other before I first emailed the two
of you a few days ago about Bishop-Coil genealogy?... btw why was it that some of the
Coil's came to live in South Dakota?... I have heard something about some South or
North Dakota land being made available in the 1850s by drawing I think for folks that
could be gotten to go up there... burrrr!... :-)... would that have been how they got
there in the first place?... btw my wife is from Fargo, North Dakota... and I have
been to North Dakota before several times to visit... I used to live in Minneapolis,
Minnesota (1970-1972) where I met my wife... Wanda, do you live in Missouri?... I
think but am not sure that Ed Coil lives in the Callaway County area... I am now living
in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri... was raised in western Audrain County on a
farm... moved later to Centralia, northeastern Boone County... then was out of state
to various places for a number of years... to Texas, Germany, Missouri, Minnesota,
Kansas, Florida, Missouri, Michigan, Missouri... looks like I'm here to stay now...

Does this look right to you Ed?... I see a LAIL (Lucinda Lail) connection...
do you have the other children of Elijah and Lucinda (Lail) Coil... that is, other than
Solomon Coil and Jacob Coil III?... the reason I asked about your COIL-LAIL connection
is because there is also a BISHOP-LAIL connection... :-)... see the "Granville Addison
and Mary Ann (Spears) Bishop Family" with link on the "Bishop Families of Montgomery
County & MO" page... the wife of Granville Addison Bishop was Mary Ann Spears... Mary
Ann's mother was Jane Pope Lail... for information about Jane Pope Lail see several
links on the "Granville Addison and Mary Ann (Spears) Bishop Family" page... :-)...
also James G Robertson (jasgrob@ultravision.net) is a descendant of the Lail line...
Wonder if Wanda Palmer Perry (a Coil descendant too) can add to our growing structure
of information for the Solomon and Permelia?... btw I have built a "Solomon and
Permelia (Renfro) Bishop Family" on the website... you can find it as a link off the
"Bishop Families of Montgomery County & MO" page... if you or Wanda have any more
information that is relevant to that family or descendants or ancestors then let me
know... :-)...

Genealogy is lots of fun... :-)... if you want info about my line take a look
at the "Bishop Families of Montgomery County & MO" link on the website - url below...
then notice at Sixth Generation: "William Frank Jr and Patricia Ann (Mulholland) Bishop
Family" select that link then you can track backwards up the generations via the
"father and mother" links on those pages... hope you don't mind sharing your genealogy
information with some other family and related members... :-)... have also been
keeping the email correspondence on some links of the "Solomon and Permelia (Renfro)
Bishop Family" page which I just set up while ago...
Judging from your roaming described above you are somewhat of a cowgirl...
:-)... are you a city cowgirl or a country cowgirl?... I grew up on a 240 acre farm in
western Audrain County, Missouri... the most my father knew about our Bishop background
was that they were from the Shamrock, Callaway County, Missouri area... I don't even
think he knew that his great-grandparents were Tyra D and Rebecca (Wilburn) Bishop who
lived just across the road from the Liberty Christian Church and Cemetery near
Shamrock... in fact Tyra and Rebecca donated the land for that cemetery in the 1850s I
think it was... that information and all that I have found out since has been learned
since my father, William Frank Bishop, died in 1978... there are several other Bishop
descendants that are online and working together on our Bishop genealogy which we have
been placing on the website... if you have any other information that would be
informative please let us know... and I think you will find Nancy Hale Lee of the
Montgomery County Genealogical Society very friendly and helpful if you ask her
questions via email... btw she is a Bishop descendant too... BUT curiously enough of a
different line of Bishops who lived in Audrain County, Missouri, in the 1800s but were
from Kentucky... later that line moved into the St Charles area near St Louis... we
have not yet been able to connect her Greenberry Bishop line with the Samuel A Bishop
family line of Montgomery County, Missouri...

I believe that Elijah's brother also married a Lail. There are
several Lails buried at Liberty Christian Cemetary. The family
appears to have moved to Shamrock from Kentucky at the same time that
the Coils did. I have information on Elijah's other children as well
as his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Valentine (Felty)
Coil/Coile/Goil/Kile/etc. I am at work right now so I don't have the
info. I plan on buying a new home computer soon which will have
internet access for my home. Right now I only have access through my
work computer. So soon I will be able to transmit GEDCOM files
with the data I have on Family Scrapbook software.

From: Edward Coil ecoil@yahoo.com
Hello everyone, Just to set the record straight, I live in St. Charles
County, Missouri but have made several visits to Shamrock in Callaway
Co.and Mexico in Audrain Co., also my mothers family (Kemna) is from
Martinsburg, MO which I believe is in Montgomery Co. I don't recall
ever finding a reference to the Coils or Lails in the History of
Callaway Co. but the History of Bourbon County, Kentucky which is
where Elijah Coil and Lucinda Lail were from has info. on Elijah's
father, Jacob Coil II, and Lucinda's parents. I believe the book may
say that Jacob II was born in Ireland but I don't believe that to be
true, rather his father, Jacob Coil I would have been born in Ireland.
If you would like all kinds of references to the
Coil/Coile/Coyle/Kile/Kyle/Goil family, you should check out a book
called Chalkey's Scotch-Irish of Augusta County Virginia. This book
has court records from around 1750s to 1780s, with references to when
Valentine Coil purchased 300 acres, to his sons serving in the British
militia during the French/Indian war, to Valentine's naturalization.
Unfortunately, the surname has multiple spellings in these court
records as I showed above, so you have to look at several different
places in the index. But the reading is quite interesting. Another
possible difficulty with the court records as well as census records
for these families are that they were not very creative in first
names, i.e. several Gabriels, Georges, Jacobs, etc. The Coils lived
in Augusta, Rockingham, and Pendleton Counties in Virginia and
Pendleton County is now in West Virginia. Family Tree Maker has a
genealogy which shows Gabriel Kyle/Kile (eldest son of Valentine
Coil). Well I will get everyone my family tree as soon as I get my new
computer. Happy hunting, this should keep you busy for a while. Ed.

What document are you referring to here as being on page 82?... by

I have photos of various graves at Liberty Christian Cemetary in
Shamrock, MO. One such tombstone reads:
COIL JAMES R. NOV 24, 1859 MAY 29, 1926
MATTIE N. JAN 1, 1863 APR 26, 1955
I show James Riley Coil as a son of Jacob Coil III and Lydia Elizabeth
Helms. Jacob III was a brother of Solomon Coil, the father of Martha
Ann Coil. So it appears that James Riley and Martha Coil were first
cousins.
I show 4 chidren for James Riley and Martha Coil:
Herbert C. Coil b. 4-May-1897 d. 15-Jun-1987 buried at Liberty (no picture)
Nora E. Coil (no information)
Stella May Coil b. 14-Jun-1885 d. 8-Mar-1886 buried at Liberty (have picture)
Bertha Lee Coil b. 7-Aug-1886 d. 25-Oct-1886 buried at Liberty (have picture)

Thanks, I tried to contact this person before regarding the Coil
family and he never returned my emails. The Kyles claim that
Valentine came from Germany and that Coil is German. Although
Valentine came on a ship that originally sailed from Germany it
stopped in England before reaching America. I believe Valentine got
on there and not in Germany. The spelling on the ships log would have
been written by the ships captain who was German. That is how I
believe the error occurred. Valentine had too many occurrences of
Coil/Coile/Coyle to be German and lived in a Scotch-Irish area of
Virginia. This is a mystery I continue to try and solve. Let me know
if any of you can get a return message from James Kyle because I would
love to find out his sources. Thanks Ed.

I find this very interesting about the Renfro, Coil, and Bishop connection.
Hope we can find more on this. Renfro Valley is located near Mt. Vernon,
Kentucky, about an hours drive, South, on I-75, from Lexington, KY. Their
address on the internet is: http://www.renfrovalley.com/
This is an interesting page. Ruby

Hello, Just to let you know. Bourbon County, Kentucky is northeast of
Lexington. Bourbon County is where the Coils and Lails came from
before moving to Shamrock, Missouri. Thought you might want to know.
Also, an update on my home computer situation. I have my new computer
but am having problems getting my genealogy software loaded. Will let
everyone know when I can send GENCOM of my files. Bye for now. Ed Coil

Ruby, looks as if the Coil-Renfro connection might have originated in
or near Bourbon County, Kentucky... at this time don't know who were
the parents and family of Solomon Coil's wife, Permelia (Renfro)... but
seems more possible now that the person for which Renfro Valley,
Kentucky, is named may be related to Permelia Renfro's father's line...
