David Bishop was born in Clark Co., Kentucky, August 24, 1824. He was the son of Levin Bishop, born Bishopville, Md, 1789, and Judith Booth Bishop (daughter of David Booth - Rev. Sol. from Va) David's father Levin served in the war of 1812 from Kentucky. Levin was discharged at Malden, March 1815. Levin moved to Boone county 1831 and died 1880, buried just north of Columbia. David served 1846-47 in the Mexican War and went with General Scott into Mexico City when that city was taken by the U.S. troops. During his thirty years residence in California, Mr. Bishop was interested financially in a number of businesses; First a livery stable on the corner of Oak St., now occupied by Lebeck's Cabinet Shop; a furniture store in the middle of the block south and facing the Depot, then he went into the lumber business with Joseph Russell who later sold to Mr. Ott; he was also a partner in Bishop and Ramsey Dry Goods Store. Two of his children are residents of California, Mrs L.F. Until 1866 he resided on a farm but during the Mexican War served in 1846 and 1847, and at the former date moved to Boone County, and came to Moniteau County in 1870. He was in the livery business here for five years, and then began selling lumber. In 1882 he engaged in the general merchandise business in partnership with J.W. Ramsey, their stock being valued at about $2,000, and the firm has since been known as Bishop & Ramsey. He also engaged in lumbering with Mr. Russell, and is doing a successful business. He owns and conducts a valuable farm near the town, and is one of the prosperous citizens of the county. In 1849 he was married to Maria A. Evans, a native of Boone county, Mo., by whom he has had three children living: Kate, Laura and James L. He was married a second time, in 1866, to Ann E. Stice, a native of Boone Co., Mo., by whom he became the father of two children: Lydia and Albert. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop are members of the Christian Church, and he belongs to the Masonic fraternity. His parents, Levin and Indeas (Booth) Bishop, were born in Maryland and Virginia, respectively, and were married in Kentucky. In 1830 they came by wagon to Boone County, Mo., where the father entered and purchased land which was in a wild state. He was in the War of 1812, and was with Gen. Harrison at the fort when Dudley was defeated by the British at Tippecanoe. He died in Boone county, Mo., in 1884, and his wife in 1872. [Note: on page 1025 there is a paragraph about L.F.
