Death of Samuel D Bishop, Auxvasse Review, 29 September 1899

			The Nevada City (California) Daily Transcript

	Samuel D Bishop age about 53 years was killed in a Mayflower Mine
explosion last evening (6 September 1899).  He was a native of Missouri.  He
served as a Confederate in the Civil War, afterward coming to California.

	He came here from Fresno something over a year ago and located with 
his family on Canada Hill, near the mine.  His son was employed at the mine
and gave up the situation to his father.  To morn him are left his widow and
a daughter, Mrs Joseph Hosken, and a daughter in San Francisco.  Also two
sons who are away, none of them in Trinity County.

	Mr. Bishop was a native of Callaway county and a son of Tyre Bishop,
who has lived for more than 60 years near Shamrock, in the northeastern part
of the county.  Besides his family in California, he leaves a father, several
brothers and one sister (Mrs J.R. Hassler of this city).  He also has a sister
Mrs H.G. Brown in Arkansas.  His mother died a few weeks ago.  He had been
in California for more than thirty years and made his last visit to his
old home in the summer of 1897.

	Died In Nevada City California, Sept 6, 1899, Samuel D Bishop, beloved
husband of Viola Bishop and son of T.D. and the late Rebecca Bishop and 
brother of Fount, Addison, Tyre, Sim Bishop, also Mrs Mary Hassler and Mrs
Jennie Brown.  A native of Missouri, aged 55 years, 8 months and 4 days.

   One of the most distressing mining accidents in the anals of the Nevada
mining district occured this afternoon.  Samuel B. Bishop and Henry Hawk
were blown to atoms by an explosion of giant powder in the Mayflower mine .
    Bishop and Hawk were working on a slope on the 200 foot level and had
just tamped the last two holes before quiting for the day.  Not having
enough powder they walked to a crosscut drift where the explosives are kept.
Soon afterwards the others were startled by a terrific explosion.

[Nettie (Bishop) Wyss told me in years gone by about a Sam Bishop that went to
out west and was killed in a mine explosion.  This seems to be the Sam Bishop

Samuel B. Bishop is Dead.  By the kindness of our old friend, Mr. T.H. French
of Hollister, California, we are enabled to furnish the particulars of the sad
taking off of Samuel B. Bishop, who grew up near Liberty church, where his 
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tyre Bishop still reside.  There are many people in 
northeast Callaway who will drop a tear over the sad news.  The following bearing 
date, Sept 6, is a special from Nevada City to the San Francisco Call:
	One of the most distressing mining accidents in the annals of the Nevada
mining district occurred this afternoon.  Samuel B. Bishop and Henry Hawk were
blown to atoms by an explosion of giant powder in the Mayflower mine.  How the
accident occurred probably will never be known, as no one lives to give the 
details.
	Bishop and Hawk were working in a slope on the 200 foot level and had 
just tamped the last two holes before quitting for the day.  Not having enough 
powder, they walked to a crosscut drift where the explosives are kept.  Soon
afterward the other miners were startled by a terrific explosion.  On account
of the great volume of powder smoke an entrance to the drift could not be effected
for several minutes.  The miners, venturing in, stumbled over the bodies of
Bishop and Hawk, frightfully mangled and torn beyond recognition.  The limbs
were severed from the body.  Late tonight the Corner removed the remains to
this city.
	Those working in the mine had not the least idea as to how the explosion
occurred.  One hundred pounds of giant powder were exploded, tearing a large
hole in the drift, and the concussion causing the timbers to shatter.
	Bishop leaves a widow, two grown sons and two married daughters.  He
was veteran of the Civil War, a native of Missouri, and came here from Fresno
County, one year ago.  Hawk was age 19 years, a son of Josiah Hawk.
