Subject: Doll M and Martha Bishop - N Kingshighway Boulevard, St Louis, MO 1917-1959 Date: 04 Apr 1998 From: William F Bishop wbishop@tranquility.net To: "Nancy (Hale) Lee" nllee@ktis.net CC: Kelly Meyer nicki@mocty.com Yesterday was at MSHS and looked up a bit more about Doll and Martha Bishop who lived along the North Kingshighway Boulevard... the St Louis City Directories from the 1800s up to 1945 are on microfilm in the Newspaper Room back by the copy/readers behind the Missouri Soundex microfilm cabinets... the area that Doll and Martha lived in seems to be roughly that between where Delmar street and Page Blvd cross North Kingshighway Boulevard... the area being just north (eastside) of the Forest Park greenry on a St Louis City map... It appears that Doll Bishop lived in the area from 1917 (5049 Von Versen Avenue) until her death in 1959 (5000s Kensington Avenue)... it appears that Martha lived with her during most of that time (also on 823 N Kingshighway Boulevard, 20 S Taylor Avenue, 5017 Vernon Avenue, 5167 Raymond Avenue, 5000a Kensington Avenue)... however in the period from about 1930 thru 1938 both Doll and Martha are missing from the St Louis City Directories (apparently living elsewhere? living at 5017 Vernon Avenue in 1939)... the two sisters worked as telephone operator and clerk mostly... Doll worked at the Washington University to the west as a stenographer in 1925-26... Doll and Martha lived with Shelby Bishop in 1917 and 1918 on 5049 Von Versen Avenue... Zelma L (still unmarried) lived nearby on 5190 Von Versen Avenue in 1918... Zelma worked at the Shapleigh Hdw Co that year... as did a George M Bishop who lived on h5009 Kensington Avenue... Zelma disappears after 1918... that George M Bishop continues to live on Kensington Avenue and work at Shapleigh Hdw Co for many more years... Shelby W Bishop died 26 March 1918 (per Family Bible information) so this fits with the St Louis City Directories information as Shelby is missing from 1919 on... Powhattan is working as a cook at the Masonic Home of Missouri in St Louis in 1922 (and also in 1920 per the Missouri Census)... also suspect perhaps she lives at the Masonic Home too after Shelby's death in 1918... there is a Shelvy L Bishop living in St Louis during the 1940s and 1950s... also found him with the SSDI search as dead in Florissant, St Louis, December 1985... I doubt if George M Bishop and Shelvy L Bishop are connected to the Doll and Martha Bishop sisters so have removed them from my information about the two sisters on your website... I looked for an obituary for Shelby Wright Bishop (died 26 March 1918) on newspaper microfilm but didn't find anything... Doll M Bishop had a phone by 1944 when she lived at 5167 Raymond Avenue... also a phone in 1954 when she is living at 5000a Kensington Avenue... curiously the last time Martha's name appears in the City Directories is 1942... tho she was still living when Doll died in 1959 per Doll's obituary..
