James Bishop (1744-1833) was born across the [Delaware] River from Philadelphia in New Jersey. There is strong evidence that he is related to the Thomas Bishop family line of Burlington County, New Jersey. About 1767 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Penn (c1753-c1833). Elizabeth grew up in Philadelphia and is a descendant of William Penn. Several children were born in the Burlington County, New Jersey area. Then in 1782 James and Elizabeth moved their family to Albemarle County, Virginia. The rest of their children were born there. James and Elizabeth remained in Albemarle County until their death about 1833. James Bishop knew the Quaker Thomas Bishop and family as his name is recorded several times (first in 1758) in the Thomas Bishop Day Book which account book has passed down thru the James Bishop's family line.
