to me... I noticed your Joshua Bishop (Pike County, Missouri) submitters
info on FamilySearch.com... did a little looking around and found some
info you may have seen already... below is a Jan 1998 email from Pat
(Bishop) Obrist which I archived on Nancy's webpages... curiously it
mentions a Joshua Bishop and some descendants of his... Pat has a Rezin
Laury Bishop connection in the St Charles, Missouri, area... don't know
if her email address iobrist@mail.win.org still works or not but you might
contact her if you haven't already done so... suspect she has access to
resources in the area that might be of interest to you... looks like
Audrain/St Charles County Greenberry Bishop's name pops up again out of
the blue!... Nancy has been trying to track his ancestry for a long,
long time now... he appears to have Kentucky roots [Greenberry and
Zerelda Emeline (Castlio) Bishop Family]... wonder if this Joshua Bishop
(associated with Frederick Co., Virginia deeds) is the same person or
line as your York County, South Carolina, Joshua Bishop?... what exactly
is your connection to Joshua Bishop ie what is the driving force behind
your research into Joshua Bishop?... could the SC Joshua Bishop line have
lived in the Frederick County, Virginia, area at some time?...

William, I have seen a few references to Greenberry Bishop and thought
you might like to see this item which I posted about six months ago.
These Bishops are descendants of Joshua BISHOP, but I find my Rezin Laury
BISHOP in this same area between 1800-1805. My Rezin BISHOP was born in
Maryland, resided in Fred. Co, Va, married in Maury Co, TN and settled in
Perry Co, MO. Wonder if these Bishops are related to the Greenberry BISHOP
you have named. BTW my two children graduated from the J. School at
Mizzou and I was in Columbia many times between 1990-1995. I live in St.
Charles, MO. There are lots of resources here, actually so many books in
the St. Charles Library, Linnemann Branch on Elm Street, that I do not

I located your information regarding Greenberry Bishop on the Internet.
I found it very interesting.
I am researching Joshua Bishop who was in the 1810 census of York County,
SC. He was born about 1785 and died 14 Sep 1827 in Pike County, MO. He
married Catherine Templeton, 20 Apr 1782 South Carolina - 23 Apr 1851 Pike
County, MO. They had: David Watson, Nancy Terrisse, John M. and Sarah
Templeton.
Joshua Bishop came to St. Charles County, MO by 1813 and purchased land
in Pike County in 1818. I am not sure where he was born, nor of his
ancestry. The first mention of him in records is in the 1810 census, though
he married about 1808 to a York County girl.
I noted with interest the apparent ties to the Castilo family of St.
Charles County. My Hostetters intermarried frequently with the Zumwalts
from the 1790s on, and the Castilo and Zumwalts are also linked.
I descend from John Hammond and Anne Greenberry of Anne Arundel County,
MD, but can make no connection whatsoever to my Bishops.
Any light that you may be able to shed on the Bishops of York County,
SC would be appreciated.

Thanks for the information. Joshua Bishop was my 4th great grandfather. His oldest
known child was born in South Carolina 15 Sep 1809, and, since he married a York
county girl, I am certain he was in that place by 1808. I have found no mention of him
in records in York County before that, and no record of his marriage. Only one child,
my 3rd great grandmother, Nancy Terrisse, appeared in the 1880 census, and that was
posthumously. Her parent's birthplaces are both given as Kentucky in that census,
though I am certain the Joshua's wife was born in York County, SC, or the area that
York was formed from. I have no idea why Kentucky was mentioned. Joshua died when
Nancy was about 14 years old and her mother lived until 1851. I really have no idea
where Joshua was prior to 1808.

Kevin, there is a Joshua Bishop born about 1785... in particular born 3 June 1784 to
Joshua and Hannah (Higgins) Bishop in Winchester, Frederick, Virginia... did some
further checking and got info with slightly different birth year range and stated to
be in Washington County of Virginia but did have two generations relatives listed on
back... he supposedly died in Kentucky... wouldn't be your Joshua Bishop but shows a
Joshua in Henry County, Kentucky... maybe there were more of 'em there... :-)...
also checked for Templeton in Kentucky and there are a number of them too tho didn't
dig very deep... I would assume you have been over these possibilities before...
haven't checked where Henry County is in relation to Trigg or Washington Counties...

Thanks for your continuing efforts, Bill. I have been searching for
Joshua's ancestry for several years and found nothing new since early
in that search. Some fresh viewpoints are welcome. I hadn't really
considered a Kentucky connection, though I know folks were pretty
mobile back then.
Catherine Templeton Bishop's birthplace in the 1850 Pike County, MO
census is given as South Carolina. The Templeton family may be traced
in South Carolina records from the 1760s until their migration to
Missouri. The 1883 Pike County, MO census indicates that several York
County families, including the Templetons came to Pike in 1811 or 1812.
It could be that Joshua and Catherine paused for some time in Kentucky
on their way to Missouri, and the family remembered that. The history
does not mention the Bishops, but that name had died out by the time
it was written.
There is a two to three year gap between the time of the 1810 York County
census and the birth of their next child in St.Charles County, MO. It
could also be that their grandson, Thomas Gibson, was away from home
when the census taker came and his wife, Margaret Alice Shoemaker,
took a guess as to the birthplace of her mother-in-law's parents. She
certainly knew her mother-in-law for at least 15 years and quite possibly
for her whole life, as the Gibsons, Shoemakers and Bishops were neighbors
for several decades. She may have known Catherine Templeton Bishop, too,
though she would have been only 6 or 7 when Catherine died. Kevin

Thanks for contacting me. I live in St. Charles, MO (and can probably find
more on St. Charles Bishops, when the snow season allows!! I am a retired
teacher from the Francis Howell School District. The CASTLIOS married into
Howell family too. There is a CASTLIO School in the district.

I am very interested in your HAMMOND GREENBURY line as I now believe my
Rezin Laury BISHOP (born somewhere in MD 1770-1780, was a grandson of
Rebecca HOMEWOOD and William BISHOP. Rebecca HOMEWOOD was the daughter of
Capt.-Thomas HOMEWOOD & Anne HAMMOND. This is a work in progress. I have
not proven Rezin's parents, but circumstantial evidence is growing.
About two months ago a researcher named Kellie, told me she has heard that
her BISHOP family had a Rezin in it. [Subsequent replies to Kellie produced
no response.] Kellie is from the Thomas BISHOP from Anne Arundel Co., MD
who married Elizabeth BARBER. I have been researching all of these lines in
the past few months. I will send my constructions of the BISHOP family and
then by separate posts the HAMMOND and others who appear to be related. You
may have noticed that the given name Rezin was used in both the HAMMOND and
GREENBURY lines.
By the way, Rezin Lowrey BISHOP (sometimes called Laury/Lowry) made a
circuotious path to Missouri. Born in MD, fl. 1800-1805 in Fred. Co., VA,
married in Maury Co., TN, then by 1817 resided in Cape Girardeau area (part
of the Upper Louisiana Territory) and then by 1827 he resided in Perry Co.,
MO. He also has a son, John M. BISHOP. among others, and my ancestor,
William Greene BISHOP, b. 1824. I strongly suspect that Rezin was married
once before he married Rebecca, and that a son by the previous marriage was
Rezin BISHOP who married in Berkeley Co. WV and then moved on to Greene Co.,
OH [where many of the other BISHOPS here had gone. This link is not proven
yet either; I plan to hire a genealogist to copy the marriage record in WV
in hopes of seeing his parents.]
I have many documents/wills/email notes in the Notes sections of my files,
but for obvious reasons do not want to lengthen this note further.

Dear Patricia,
Many thanks for posting information on Frederick County Bishops. For
some time I have wanted to do research on this family since I have a
hunch they are mine, but have been busy on my other Bishop line which
descends from Capt. John Bishop of Charles City County Virginia.
I am a descendant of John Bishop and his son John, Jr. (born 1799 S.C.)
who migrated from Edgefield District South Carolina to Wayne County
Mississippi in 1818.
John, Jr. moved on to Hinds County Mississippi and
then to Lauderdale County Mississippi where he died.
Also migrating from Edgefield District in 1818 to Wayne County Mississippi
were Thomas and Esias Bishop who were still living in 1850. They gave place
of birth as Maryland and were born c.1778 and c.1780.
My John, Jr. is listed as John
G. Bishop on one Lauderdale County tax list. He named a son John
Greenberry Bishop. John Greenberry's brother gave the name to one of his
sons, who was my grandfather. I feel sure the G. in John Jr.'s name was
Greenberry and suspect this was the middle name of his father, although I
have nothing indicating that it was except that family history speaks of
his son as junior Thomas and Esias were brothers according to one
researcher. Both named sons Thomas T. Bishop. I found out from a deed
that the middle name of one of them was Tillman. I suspect that my John
was a brother of Thomas and Esias. Two of their sons bought land in
Lauderdale County, but did not move there. I am wondering if John,
Thomas, and Esias were sons of Greenberry Bishop (over 46 on 1810
census). Time frame, names, and Maryland connection all fit. They may
have migrated when young and left no tracks where they originated. If
they were given their inheritance at that time, it may be impossible to
prove. There was an estate inventory for a Greenberry Bishop in Berkeley
County WV (Virginia at that time) in 1815, but no heirs are named.
Looks as if John, Solomon, Samuel, Joshua, and Greenberry were
all contemporaries. "Revolutionary Patriots of Ann Arundel County
Maryland" by Henry C. Peden, Jr. lists the following:
Greenberry Bishop took oath of allegiance March 2, 1778
John Bishop took oath of allegiance March 1, 1778
Solomon Bishop took oath of allegiance March 1, 1778
If you happen to run across anything else of interest, I shall greatly
appreciate your sharing. I do most of my research by way of microfilm
ordered through the local LDS Church. It would be interesting to see if
there are estate records for any of the Bishops you have found. I will
try to check into this after Christmas unless you are able to do so before.
