George Washington Bishop Jr (??Jan?1905-15Jan1973) left Montgomery County, Missouri, as a young adult and did not maintain contact with family there. He found his way to Alaska in the late 1920s running dogs and trapping in the upper Kuskokwin River region. George Washington Bishop Jr married Phyllis Jane Dunn (19??-01Sep2005) in 1954. They bought and ran the Inlet Trading Post in Homer, Alaska, living first in the back of the store and later, as the family grew, in a log home behind the store. In 1985 the beach in front of the Inlet Trading Post was officially named Bishop's Beach. George died January 15, 1973 and is buried in the Hickerson Memorial Cemetery in Homer, Phyllis died September 1, 2005, and is buried in the same cemetery. |
