Felicitas Casas

Jose Manuel De La Trinidad Leal

  • Born: Bef Aug 9, 1833, Lampasas, Texas Territory, Mexico
  • Marriage: Felicitas Casas in 1856 in Leal Community, Atascosa, Texas
  • Died: Apr 2, 1917, Atascosa County, Texas

bullet  General Notes:

Relative gives his full name as Jose Manuel de la Trinidad Leal, although every record I have found only lists him a s Manuel.

Manuel supposedly was the first settler to the Leal Community and started the Leal Ranch.
L.D.S. gives the marriage date about 1855, however Atascosa county was not formed until 1856. Before that it was Bexar county. Leal Community and Leal Cemetery were located on the Leal Ranch, about 5 miles east of where hwy 281 and I -37 now intersect, south of Pleasanton. The east border of the ranch appeared to be the Atascosa River.
Some birth dates figured from children's birth certificates in possession of Tony Leal. He has a copy of court order delayed certificate of birth for Juan and a Bureau of Vital Statistic standard birth certificate for Maria.

From Eduardo Leal: 'This is the story of Manuel Leal, as told to me by my father's oldest sister, born in 1892 and to hers of that generation. Manuel married Felicita Casas in Losoya, an area close to Graytown, where Manuel apparently grew up. Not long after the marriage, apparently, (his father) Antonio told Manuel he had to leave and told him to head south until he found water. He headed south and ended up on Atascosa Creek, in what is now Atascosa County. He started his ranch there and had little contact with his siblings and parents after that. Apparently one day, years afterwards, Antonio told one of his younger sons to ride south and look for his brother. He found Manuel and his wife doing very well, with a number of new children. The brother stayed a few minutes, said "we just wanted to see how you were doing," and left. These sorts of stories abound.
The point is that there wasn't much contact and, as a result, we have little information about Manuel's parents.'

Jose married Felicitas Casas in 1856 in Leal Community, Atascosa, Texas. (Felicitas Casas was born before Aug 9, 1837 in Republic Of Texas and died on Jun 9, 1914 in Atascosa County, Texas.)
