We don't know the name of Bill's first dog, but he was pretty young:

This is Bill and his dad, Pete, with their dog. This is about 1940.

A few years later, in 1946, perhaps, Bill did have his own pet dog, Whitey:

Bill and Whitey, on the farm, in Iowa.
