FAMILY ASSOCIATION
Welcome to our Website George Philip Wertman settled in 1749 in Lynn Township, present day Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He had five sons - Michael, Jacob, George Philip, Simon, and Martin. Four supported the American cause of Liberty and one remained loyal to the King of England. Since the Revolution, Wertman descendants have defended this country in the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. The history of this great German-American family is intertwined with the history of the United States. Descendants of this family still abide in Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Schuylkill and other counties in Pennsylvania. We are in contact with individuals from California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia to name but a few states. On 1 July 2000, 42 Wertman relatives assembled in Allentown, Pennsylvania and formed the Wertman Family Association. Actually, they rejuvenated an association that had been active until World War II. Our goal is to produce an accurate description of our Wertman family heritage. We hope that you will help us achieve our goal. If you desire to join us, please contact me.

A DNA Project ... is underway. A discussion of the current results can be found here. The Y-Chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son, although infrequent mutations do occur. We can compare their test results and determine to a high degree of certainty, if two males are related or not. The ultimate use of this exciting new science would be to find a match with a volunteer, who is aware of his ancestral village in Germany. We initially chose to take advantage of the free testing offered by the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, a nonprofit research project. We still have several samples pending, but their project is winding down and they are no longer accepting requests for test kits. We have chosen Family Tree DNA, as the new home for our project. The project is open to Wertman males of known, or unknown ancestry. Ladies may participate by encouraging eligible males to submit a sample. Our Executive Board has approved a plan where descendants of certain lines are eligible for a scholarship that will pay the complete cost of their test. Contact me for more details, or to learn if you qualify. You may join at: Wertman Surname Project. Tom Young, WFA DNA Project Administrator
The Historical Acceptance Committee ... reviews available data on the first three generations of descendants of George Philip Wertman and determines what can and cannot be proven. The results will eventually be presented on this site with uncertainties clearly indicated. It is not our intention to create the largest Wertman database, but the most accurate. This will always be a work in progress and subject to change as new information surfaces. We welcome contributions of all verified Wertman family data for inclusion in our online database. Please forward any comments or questions to:
