LOSH, formerly and later ARLOSH, of Woodside. According to Henry Lonsdale (see LWC), William Arlosh alias Losh, yeoman, was of Woodside, Wreay, in the 1570’s. The estate descended to John Losh (d.1799), who marr. 1755 Catherine, dau of John Liddell, of Moorhouse, Burgh-by-Sands, q.v. Their eldest son John Losh (d.1814, aged 59) succ. To Woodside, was a partner in the Walker Alkali Works, Newcastle upon Tyne, and was High Sheriff of Cumberland 1811. He marr. Isabella, dau of Thomas Bonner, of Callerton (N), and was succ. By their dau Sarah (1785-1863), a generous benefactor to Wreay, and the builder of Wreay church. Her uncle James Losh, of Jesmond Grove, Newcastle upon Tyne (1763-1833), who marr. Cecilia, dau of the Rev Roger Baldwin, q.v., was a distinguished lawyer and Recorder of Newcastle. He was also well known as a philanthropist and political reformer. His eldest son James Losh, M.A. (Cantab) (1802-58), was a County Court Judge. Another son Lt-Col John Joseph Losh, Madras Army, was of wreay Syke, where he died 1862. Woodside was inherited by his brother William Septimus Losh who marr. His first cousin Cecilia, dau of George Losh by his wife Frances, dau of Joseph Wilkinson of Carlisle, q.v.= Their only son the Rev James Losh, J.P., M.A. (Dunelm), of Woodside (1834-1904_, resumed the name of Arlosh 1870. He was incumbent of Ponsonby 1861-71, and Diocesan Inspector of Schools in Carlisle diocese. He became a Unitarian and occasionally officiated in the Unitarian Chapel, Carlisle. He was a generous benefactor to Manchester Copllege, Oxford. In 1859 he marr. Isabella, youngest dau of Capt Thomas Benn, R.N., q.v.; their only son Godfrey died v.p. Arms. Argent a fess Gules between three griffins’ heads erased Azure (LWC). On the gateposts at Woodside, however, the griffins’ heads are couped. Crest Two ostrich feathers erect Proper.
