9. George3 MCKENZIE (George2, William
FISHERMAN DROWNED IN EDEN.
Yesterday morning, about half-past eleven o'clock, a lamentable fatal accident accrued George McKenzie, fisherman to Mr. Carter Wood, Warwick Hall. During the forenoon McKenzie and an assistant had been engaged in removing by means of a windlass a tree root which had floated down the Eden during the flood and had lodged against the salmon coops. While the two men were so employed McKenzie slipped his foot and fell into the river, which was running full and strong at the time. In his fall he clutched at the rope of the windlass and succeeded in getting hold of it but the catch not being upon the handle the rope ran out further and afforded him no assistance. His companion seized him by the coat and endeavoured to pull him out; but in consequence of the weight of the fallen fisherman and the strength of the current he was unable to render any effectual aid in that way. Next the assistant succeeded in fastening a rope round McKenzie's arm and then attempted to wind him up by the windlass. Unfortunately the rope slipped and the drowning man was washed down the stream quite beyond the reach of further help. His dead body was found some little time afterwards about half a mile down the river. The deceased who was 52 years of age, leaves a widow and family. He was an excellent salmon fisher and on the 2nd November, l892, landed the "record" Eden salmon caught with the rod, the fish weighing 56Ibs. He kept the Queen's Arms Inn at Warwick, besides acting as fisherman at Warwick Hall.
