6. William Losh3 MCKENZIE (George2, William1) (#221) was born in Edinburgh, Midlothian 7 October 1831. Birth site: 4 Shrub Place.

He married Ellen ELLIOTT in Heworth St Alban, Co Durham, 25 December 1857. Said to be of full age on marriage certificate in December 1857. Parents married on 27 September 1835. Ellen was the daughter of Alexander ELLIOTT and Mary Sophia STOREY.

William's occupation in 1866 - Soap Manufacturer, then living at 1 Barrington Place, Gateshead

In 1858 he became Managing Director if the Tyne Soap Company., Limited, based on the Shore Shore. The company was incorporated on 26 April 1858. He subscribed for 50 out of 2,500 shares at £10 each, of which £8 was called up per share. The company was dissolved on 26 April 1882.

The Memoranmdum of Association was signed on 12 April 1858 by A[lexander] Cruickshank and Wm McKenzie, directors.

William's occupation in 1892 - machine man, according to Maude Mary's marriage certificate, at which he was supposedly a witness. However each of his daughters gave different information on his occupation on each of their marriages throughout the 1880s following the suicide of his wife, Ellen Elliott in 1883.

child 21 vii. Frances Alice MCKENZIE (#209) was born in Gateshead, Durham 2 October 1868. She married Isaac HUMPHREY in Auckland, 18 November 1889. It is possible that she is not the daughter of William Losh McKenzie, but she is the only Frances McKenzie on the 1881 census and no other possible births have been found. It also begs the question who was the witness to Frances's sister Maude Mary's wedding in 1892, or did his children not know what had happened to him after his wife, Ellen Elliott's suicide in January 1883. They all have given different occupations in 1884 and subsequently on their marriage certificates and it is known that the Tyne Soap Company had been dissolved by the Companies Registry in 1882.
